Renaming File character limit

I'm using PSE 6. When I save a file it doesn't seem to matter how long a name I give it. But when I try to rename a file it limits the number of characters I can use. This is frustrating and surely there must be some way around it without having to open each photo individiually and rename via 'save as'.

Can anyone shed any light on this please.
