GIMP has a great option when cropping - you can have it display rule of thirds, center lines, or golden sections AS YOU CROP. I would be happy if PSE would have at least rule of thirds.

Set the grid lines for 33% to see thirds to use as crop guides or download panosfx's free rule of thirds cropping action.

Thanks for the suggestion of a PanoFx action (just learned of them today). I'll try that. Setting the grids to 1/3 doesn't help DURING the crop - only before or after - at least not when I've tried in PSE7. With GIMP, the lines moved as I move the crop outline.

The 'Rule of Thirds' is not an exact science and not really a rule; it is a suggestion. The exact position of the main subject is a function of the subject and the artist. It can vary greatly depending on what you are trying to convey to the viewer. Your own eye is a much better judge than any action you can find. Better to train your eye than to rely on someone else's action. Once you have trained your eye, you will find yourself perfoming the "Rule of Thirds" in your camera, not in PSE, and the issue will become moot.
