There is going to be a spectacular meteor shower tonight if the conditions are right.
There are stories on the internet. Here (http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2009/31jul_perseids2009.htm) is one I found.
If the skies stay clear tonight I want to try my luck and getting some photos.

It's a universal conspiracy - whenever the Perseids come around you can count on mostly or completely cloudy skys where I live - it seems to happen every time. I hope you've got better conditions!

ditto, but I do live in the Pacific Northwest so par for the course. Although, August is typically pretty dry and cloud free. What gives?

I was fortunate in that we did have very clear skies tonight. I sat outside a little over an hour and I did see maybe 5-6 meteors streaking thru the sky, it was nothing at all like I was hoping to see. Perhaps if I had the time and I stayed outside a lot longer I would have seen a spectacular show. But again maybe it would not have gotten any better. Where I live there is too much light pollution anyway :(

It was a very nice show in southwest Ohio. Mr. L. and I went out just before midnight and quickly saw several with tails that reached across the sky. The numbers picked up more toward morning which is typical.
Thanks, Charles, for the reminder! I think I would have missed it this year without your posting!

Lorri,
You are most welcome! I am happy you got a good show out of it. I had heard or read somewhere the show gets better later in the morning, but I need my 'beauty sleep' :p and do need to be in bed long before that time.

I didn't get a single shot of the meteors, didn't even try any. I did, however, make a new friend in the process of hanging out in the backyard late at night...

I hope at least that you fed her even if it means she will never go away.
I checked the sky for over an hour after darts last night and never saw any comets (In Australia Skies) or any friendly cats.

Saw one tonight. Was too hazy last night. Didn't try any pics tho. Anyone take some shots?

I was out again last night for just over an hour. Saw small ones and seven or eight nice large meteors with long tails across the sky--one was really spectacular. I didn't even try to get any photos. Mr. L. had some plan of setting the camera up and using the release cable to take photos at timed intervals in the hopes of catching a visible meteor.
Men! We're out in this gorgeous night with crickets and tree frogs calling, stars above and meteors whipping across the sky...and he wants to time photo exposures.
Thanks again, Charles, for the reminder about this event. It was lovely both nights and I'm sure we would have missed it without your post!

Lorri,
Again you are most welcome for the reminder! I am happy you got a good show out of it. Last night I also went out. As I was walking out last night I did partially see a spectacular meteor with a huge tail! :D I wish now I had gone outside just 30 seconds sooner! After that it took a very long time until I finally saw one more faint shooting star:(
Clouds & rain :( I've been psyched all week for this.
Rob,
I am really sorry you did not get to see anything at all. What a huge disappointment on your end.

Rob, I'm sorry the weather didn't cooperate with the meteor timing. To make it a teachable moment though, can you share a little about how you planned to photograph the event?

Well, I had planned to camp out on my friends deck (they have an incredible open view)
Was going to set up the camera on a tripod, set mode to manual, and shutter speed to at least 30 seconds for really nice trails. Use the largest aperture (smallest F-Stop) available (depending on lens) and set ISO around 100 to 200 (depending on ambient light). I also use a shutter release cable to avoid vibration, as well as using a three second mirror lock.
Also I would have shot in RAW :)

For Rob, Lorri and others,
On our local news they said the meteor show should be available for the rest of the month! It may not be as strong a show, but it will still be around for awhile anyway :)
