View Full Version : Motion Blur Problem

When I try to apply motion blur at any angle above about 50 deg. I get the message "Photoshop Elements (Editor) has encountered a problem and needs to shut down." I have tried it on several photos with the same results.

Any suggestion on what I am doing wrong?

Bob, I can't reproduce the problem in PSE6.

What version of Elements are you using (and Mac or PC)?

Is this something newly discovered, e.g., has it worked in the past?

You might try the three-fingered start up to delete preferences and return to the default settings. Sometimes that helps put things back in order.

With Elements shut down, hold down the CTRL, ALT and Shift keys, and start Elements, answer "Yes" to the question that pops up about deleting the preferences/settings (they will be rebuilt by Elements so it take a couple of minutes).

Thanks Jeff for the suggestion, I will try it now and let you know what happens.

Jeff,

Still shuts down. I am using PSE 7 with Windows XP.

I am a new user of PSE 7 and this is the first time I tried the motion blur filter in a vertical position.

I am following the video tutorial "Making a Stage Curtain". Everything works fine until I try to apply the motion blur filter.

Bob, As I said I have no problem with PSE 6 (Vista), but you may have stumbled upon a bug. Perhaps other 7 users can try to duplicate the problem.

To be clear, everything works OK as long as you don't change the angle to >50 degrees, right?

That's right, I have been fighting this for 2 days so I finally ininstalled PSE 7 and re-installed it. Same exact problem!!.

I am able to use the motion blur in the horizontal mode so I turned my image on its side and presto! I could apply the motion blur. Then turned my image back to vertical and all is well.

I still do not know why it will not work in the vertical mode.

Thanks for your input and time.

I've tried to duplicate it (PSE 7 on Vista 64) and can't. Is there anything unusual about the file? Very large? What format (not that the format should matter once open in PSE)?

I tried it and it worked ok. I have PSE7 on Win XP. What are your dimension sizes and resolution? What settings are you trying to use for the motion blur?

I am following the tutorial "Making a Stage Curtain" by the book. Exactly the same settings as in the tutorial.

I tried reinstalling PSE 7 and that didn't work. I finally just rotated the image 90 deg., applied the motion blur at 0 deg. and it worked. I then re-positioned my image and all is well. Still don't know why I have the problem trying to use it in the 90 deg. mode.

I have had this problem with PSE 6 (Win XP) during this tutorial and others. My work around: Make sure the canvas is a perfect square then rotate the image 90 degrees. Apply the motion blur horizontally, then rotate the image back to vertical and crop out any extra canvas.

I'm having the same problem as Bob. When I apply the motion filter it works fine up to maximum blur, but when I try to adjust the angle, the programme crashes and shuts down. If I open Edit without deleting preferences the motion blur is stuck at the last setting and crashes if I try to adjust. If I delete preferences the motion blur is OK till I try to change the angle, then it crashes. The image rotate doesn't make any difference.
I'm using Elements 7 on XP Home with 2 gig of ram.
Any ideas?

Sorry, now I get what you mean with the rotate forward & back. It's OK for a straight one off angle, but I was trying to follow an old tut vid 'Backgrounds', on which you played with the angle & blur to get your own effect. This I can't do 'cos it crashes.

Interestingly this also happens on my system using CS4.

I've submitted a support case report to Adobe.
I'll post their response if & when they respond.

Just an update

I've just replaced my computer with a newer, higher spec model and the motion blur works fine now, I can spin the angle like a top.
Obviously a hardware issue.
