View Full Version : Uninstall Elements 2.0

After installing Elements 3.0, I deleted Elements 2.0 (MAC) with the exception of the 2.0 "icon" which won't delete. I get a response that the icon is "locked". I checked with the "get info" file and there is nothing indicating the icon is locked. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can delete the old icon?

Ahhh... the love of Unix systems :-D. You can make it full of beautiful graphics and easy to daily use... but it's still unix.

I'm going to take a guess, and say that you are probably trying to delete an icon that was placed during an administration mode, and that now, you're deleting through another account.

Other things... I know for a fact you are on journaled format, because adobe products don't even install on unix format, let alone run. So it isn't that kind of issue. As a general rule, if you have been shutting your computer off with the power button, rather than going through the shutdown menu command*, your permissions are likely pretty messed up. In that case, you should simply run permissions through 'Disk Utility' in the 'Utilities' folder, in the 'Applications' folder. Then restart your computer after the permissions have been fixed, and try it again through your admin account. If that doesn't work... which it should if you did it right... then boot up off of your OS X panther install disks, and got to the upper menus, and choose disk utility, and then procede to repair your disk from the CD drive allowing for optimal permissions repair. At worst, you would want to get a utility like Disk Warrior or Norton Utilities 8.0 to run an emergency disk repair.

I hope that was helpful.

*shutdown menu command ~~ selecting this and waiting for the computer to shut down is called proper shutdown procedures. It minimizes later headaches.

I was advised to uninstall Elements 2.0 on my PowerBook G4 running OSX 10.3.5 by simply dragging the icon from the Applications folder to the Trash.

Problem is I now can't empty the Trash... message reads: "This operation cannot be completed because the item 'Automate' is in use.".

Searched Elements 2.0 for 'Automate' but no luck.

Emailed Adobe Support for a fix but still awaiting reply.

Do I actually need to uninstall 2.0 while running 3.0?

No, you do not. Unlike Windows operating systems, your previous version of a program will not be affected by the current version. I've have Photoshop 7 and installed Photoshop CS and had both on my computer, running fine individually, without any issue, and the Photoshop CS didn't even try to delete my Photoshop 7 which it would have been more than happy to do on Windows. OSX is just designed that way. The Installer program is not designed to be able to delete the prior version of the program, and for that, I am MOST THANKFUL. As new programs are filled with bugs, and hard drives are so large these days, i mean.. you can order a new eMac from apple's online store with 160GB Hard Drive built in. So the prior version is not an issue. And theoretically... simply dragging a folder of a program to the trash should have no consequence either, as the files that would be in the library would still be present. The only consequence would be if Elements 3 used the same exact name initilization file to start up Elements 3 and it differed in Elements 2. In this, it would be possible that OSX would rename the file on install with a 1 after it, and Elements 3 would be trying to use Elements 2s file. That would be a serious bug in their programing for sure. Even then, it's unlikely, as changing log files are usually kept outside of the systems folder, usually in the programs folder.

Bob,

Try "Secure empty trash" instead of the normal empty trash ... that should do it.

Finally located 'Automate' in Elements 2.0 and it is locked (Padlock Icon)... anyone know how I unlock it?

Also re my previous post: tried Secure Empty Trash but that doesn't work either.

Bruce ... the only "Automate" I can find is a folder in Plug Ins. Where have you found your locked file?

Hi Wendy

Thanks for the reply.

After previous futile attempts to delete/uninstall Elements 2.0 I now have just one file left in the folder in Applications.

Within that file (Automate) is a further file called description.xml which is the one that is locked.

This is the file that appears to be preventing me from deleting Elements 2.0.

Hi Bruce,

I found it ... click on the file and do Apple I then make sure that Ownership & Permissions are set to "read and write".

Givee that one a try and I will keep my fingers crossed.

Bruce,

I won't be around for a few days ... but I'll check when I get back to see if you have managed to sort it out.

My elements 2.0 will not open. The message says that the preference files have been deleted. My thought was to uninstall and then reinstall. How do I do this and is the uninstall even needed.

Immediately after double-clicking on its icon, press and Command - Option Shift, then answer yes to the dialog box.

This will reset your preferences and if they've already been deleted, it will create a new set.

Hope this helps!

Ray,
I tried holding down Command, Option, Shift together and answered yes to the question but the program still would not complete it's opening sequence.
Shows the same message about deleted preference files.

Hi ...

If you have tried deleting the prefs then I would be inclined to drop the Adobe folder in the trash and then re-install it ...

Do let us know how you go on ...

Hi,

I was hoping someone could help. I have the same problem as Bruce did only I don't have any folders or files in my plug-in folder so I can't locate the locked file that is preventing me from deleting the program. The message is "the operation can not be completed because the item 'icon' is locked". Any ideas??

Thanks

Hi Nathalie ...

There haave been quite a few problems mentioned here so lets just make sure which one you have ...

Are you trying to delete PSE2 and have dragged it into the trash but now the trash won't empty ?

If so have you tried finder>Secure Empty Trash ?

Hi Wendy,

Yes that is was I have done. I have moved the folder to the trash but it won't empty because it says the item 'icon' is locked. I have already tried secure empty trash but with no luck.

Thanks

Nathalie ...

Try holding down the Option Key whilst you are doing Empty trash :)

Another thought is can you find which Icon is locked ..

Try doing File Info on them .. one of them should have the Locked box ticked. Unlock it and try again :)

Hi again,

I tried holding down option at the same time, didn't work unfortunately. The weird thing is there are no files, so i can't do File info on them otherwise I would have simply unlocked all files. As it is, you open the trash and inside is the PSE2 folder and when you open that its the plug-in folder, but there are no more files or folders in the plug-in folder. :(

Hi Nathalie,

There may be a way with Onyx, a free software which lets you do all kind of things, including if memory serves me well a force empty the trash.

Hi Nathalie ...

Try a File Info in the Plug Ins folder itself ... I just tried it and a folder can be locked too :)

Hi Wendy, Ray,

Thanks for your help! The plug-in folder was not locked, but I discovered what the problem was through the Onyx software. The locked file was in fact hidden hence why I couldn't unlock it. I changed settings on Finder so that all hidden files were shown and then I unlocked them, consequently I was able to delete the program completely! :D

I am so happy, it was a small thing but it was starting to bug me just sitting there in the trash folder!

Thanks again for your help!
