View Full Version : Magic wand selections/changes and an "edge" problem

Not sure if I'm missing something, but when I do a selection with the magic wand and then, say, change the color - - it seems to mess up the edges for me.

That is, the perimeter of the changed area often then looks choppy - - as if the perimeter did not take the full change in color (or any change in color?).

Is there a way to include the edge/perimeter in the change of color and to ensure a full/filled in edge.

To me it's sort of like in Powerpoint where you can choose to include the "line" around the object to be colored or not. I've looked but cannot find something like this in PSE - - and usually end up with poorly defined lines/perimeters after a change. Sort of a saw-tooth like edge.

Hope this makes sense, and if someone could help out that would be appreciated.

thanks,

Ron

Ron, you can try lowering the tolerance on the magic wand which will help not cut into your image. You can change the tolerance as you select and select a little at a time, thereby controlling the amount of jagged edges.
Lowering the tolerance will not select as much, but you can alway go back and make additional selections, or finish the edges with a soft white brush.
It works best for selecting areas next to solid colors.

I prefer a soft white brush or the polygonal lasso to select an image, both are very accurate and don't leave jagged edges.
Post back if you need additional info.

Ron, you can also expand your selection. Sometimes that helps select those extra pixels that PS missed the first time around.

In PSE 6 (probably similar in other versions), with your selection active, choose SELECT > MODIFY > EXPAND.

On that SELECT menu is another option you might try: REFINE EDGE, which gives you some tools to smooth those edges.

Good luck with your project!
