I am unable to open jpgs in Camera Raw dialogue (as discussed in Matt K's June 22 Video tut). I am using PSE5. Is this just a PSE6 or PSE7 thing?

First, you have to have ACR installed. (Is it? Can you open RAW in ACR/PSE5?)

Open the PSE5 Editor

select "Open As" (not "Open")

Change the file type to "Camera Raw"

Select the .jpg you want to open

I am getting the message "Cannot Open Due to A Program Error" Something messed uo with my PSE5 I think

Clarke,

ACR = Adobe Camera Raw

You can dl it HERE (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=40&platform=Windows) - scroll down for the version for PSE5, I think version 4.2 is the latest update for PSE5.

Hi, I have PSE Version 5 and I have ACR 4.6 installed and can open Jpegs in ACR.
ACR 4.6 is the first version that allowed opening Jpegs in ACR.
The Adobe website seems to suggest that 4.6 does not work in V5.
Not true. You need ACR 4.6 to open jpegs and it does work in V5.

Unfortunately ALL Adobe websites (Exchange etc) lock up my computer!! The minute I get onto one, my whole computer locks...I can not open the website. I can't figure this out, but it is one hell of a burden for a Photoshop Elements user. Adobe is the ONLY site on which I have this problem!! Would there be any other place I could get this patch???

This TechNote is correct:-

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/407/kb407110.html

It is the best place to go for trouble in opening any file in ACR.

Athegn...all I can say is that 4.6 is working for me on PSE5 for jpgs. Are you suggesting that this patch will not allow me to open "real" RAW files (Nikon NEFs)?

The Nikon D300 is supported by ACR 4.6, so no problem with those RAW images. If you have a newer camera, it may or may not be supported. The newer versions of ACR are released to include support for new cameras, however, the highest version for PSE5 is 4.6. For the 5.x versions you would have to upgrade to PSE6 or 7.

Hi Juergen,
V5 and ACR 4.6 works on XP.
I'm not sure I understand what you mean by 5.x versions.
If I have to get Vista:eek: and the patch for running V5 (5.02) on Vista then ACR 4.6 won't work?
Hope I don't have to go there.
I was hoping to hang on till Win7 and take advantage of this "emulation"(?) thing to run all my old stuff. Like Wordperfect 8 and Word 98. The newer Word, like 2003, which I have, makes me seasick. All that shifting around --- aaaargh.

If you could clarify that bit for me.
Just so I can sleep better w/o having nightmares.
Thanks!

Marie,
Yes, V5 + ACR 4.6 do work on XP, that's what I tried to say. 5.x means 5.0 through (currently) 5.4, which will not run with PSE5. That will only be a problem for folks who have newer cameras, which are not covered by ACR 4.6.

I am not familiar with the Windows 7 emulation modes, but I hope that 5.0.2 will also run in Win 7 as is.

Hi Juergen, thanks for the clarification.
Sorry, jumped to the wrong conclusion.

The upcoming version of the Windows Operating System - Windows 7, will include (in the Professional and Ultimate versions) a virtualized version of Windows XP. Or so I hear . . . ;)

This could be a great deal for everyone, since it would allow Microsoft to dump support for older "legacy" software from their newer versions. One of the criticisms that Windows has is it's support of older software that ends up bloating the operating system, having security issues and slowing it down.

By making a virtual space where these older programs can run (under XP) it allows the newer versions to be leaner and more nimble - while still retaining support (via virtualization) for older software. It all sounds fine, I guess we will see how it works out.

No. I am not saying the patch will not work. I am saying that the TechNote correctly states that 4.6 works with PSE 5; I have ACR 4.6 working with my PSE 5.0.2.

If you want to know what ACR/DNG works with what camera and with which Photoshop/Elements version keep your eye on the TechNote; be aware that it can take a few days to update the TechNote on release of a new version of ACR. It was several days after the FULL release of ACR 5.4 that the TechNote was updated. The TechNote was not updated for the Release Candidate of ACR 5.4.
