Opening RAW in Iphoto

Pretty new at this so appreciate this forum. I use NikonD60 and tried to open photos shot with RAW format. I have a SD card that connects right into USB port. I can see photos in IPhoto prior to importing but after importing I get a error message that these files could not be imported.

So does Iphoto not support RAW...is it camera specific...is it iPhoto version specfic(I have version 7.1)..I have not used this card to try to import JPEG so maybe its a faulty SD card?....Can I open in Bridge and if yes why?
