recoloring a dark item to a lighter color e.g. black to yellow

I am trying to color a grey frame to a lighter color (e.g.) yellow. I cannot get the exact color that I picked with my color picker.
Using the paint bucket only blends the two colors and I get a green.

How can I accomplish the recoloring?

If you select the frame (make it active) you can paint over the dark color replacing it with the new color. This can also be done on a new overlay.

As a lost resort, if you're not getting what you want then paint over the dark color with white and then with the new color.

Try selecting the frame, then hitting the delete key. That will make the frame transparent (removing the gray), you can then use the paint bucket to fill the selection with your chosen color. If you need more detailed steps, let me know and I will post them for you.
