As a novice with little time to complete this project, I'd scale back my idea. How about using graphics like you see on the poster and working with them as your starting point?
That would eliminate the need to learn how to select around the shape of a real person - a process that takes skill and knowledge and lots of time and patience.
If you had lots of time, I'd say "go for it" - but since you have a deadline, I'd simplify to an easier project.

Hi ...
If you take a look at Adobe Studio Exchange http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/exchange/index.cfm?event=productHome&exc=16
and do a search on Silhouettes then you should be able to find some silhouette brushes or custome shapes
Ypou can then use those to create the images :)
