Matt Kloskowski has this wonderful video tutorial in the Elements Techniques membership area on using Camera Raw in Elements on JPEG images. His illustration is done on a Mac and describes the process for selecting a JPEG image, but getting it to open in the Elements Camera Raw applet.

I tried this procedure using Elements 7 in Windows Vista. In Elements, I went to a folder with the Open dialog box Files of Type set to JPEG. Several JPEG files appeared in the window. I then highlighted one of the JPEG files.

In Matt's tutorial, he then changed the Files of type to Camera Raw. The JPEG files remained in his window and he clicked on one of the JPEG files to open it in Camera Raw rather than selecting the Open button.

On my Windows setup, as soon as I change the Files of type to Camera Raw, the JPEG files in the windows above disappear.

I know that Camera Raw is working because I can open Raw files in Camera Raw.

Is there a way Elements can be customized in Windows to take advantage of Matt's tip?

Thanks in advance.

Use Open As..., not Open. Here you can change with the drop-down menu to Camera Raw. Then select the JPEG file you want to open.

Hi,

You need to use File > Open As. Then select Camera Raw as the format. Your JPEG file will open up in the Raw Converter.

One of the main differences between the Windows and Mac version of Elements is that the Mac does not include the Organiser.

The Organiser is really the place you should be controlling your images and opening them from there in the Editor.

Non the less there appears no way to open a JPEG as a Camera Raw file from the Organiser. Which means that you must go to the Editor first and then use File > Open As, as previously suggested.
