In PSE 7 I want to draw the outline of heads in a B&W image of some 60+ people. I can manually write in the numbers to identify each person.
The idea is to pass the outline on to a group who will then write in the names of the people.
I suppose I need some sort of high contrast method to just show the outline of the heads? With 60+ heads to outline a manual method will be time consumming to say the least!
Can anyone please advise?

Oh thats a difficult one ...
If there is enough contrast then maybe a threshold adjustment layer will work ??

Maybe find edges filter? Possibly combined with threshhold?

Athegn, are you trying to simply "hi-light" each persons face, or actually create a silouette, where the "outline" carefully traces each person's head?
If it is the first case, I would put a new white layer on top, drop the opacity to say 35-50% so you can see the underying image, and then draw ovals (using the eliptical marquee tool) around each head. Hold the shift key down and each new oval is added tothe selection, and then hit the delete key and clip out the centers of all the ovals to reveal the faces underneath.
The semi-transparent white top layer also will serve as a stable area for your text/numbers

You might try the custom shape tool with talk bubbles selected.
Just make sure that they are filled with white.... Tom :)

"..or actually create a silouette, where the "outline" carefully traces each person's head?"
and each outline head holds a number corresponding to an index, external to the image.
It is this one.
I have reviewed the image and see that 100+ is more accurate so any manual solution is going to be very time consuming!

In Facebook you can upload a photo, then identify each person so that when you cursor over the head, the name appears. Would that help in your case. Jean

Unfortunately this must be a hard copy as it is to go into an existing photo album; most of the viewers do not have or want computers.
But I may follow up the Facebook idea as well.

take a copy of your group photo and convert to B/W (may not need to) and then do a Threshold adjustment. Play around with it until you get the outline of the heads and then take your brush tool and clean out the facial features that remain. This will give you the position and outline of all the the people and give you a place to write a number or put in with the type tool.
