Hi guys,
taking baby steps in camera raw at the moment and have been looking at some tuts on U tube.
Well, i was suprised that my E 4 can handle raw files BUT its nothing like the interfaces i've been looking at on the tuts.
Usually they are done in full PS or a version of CS.
So...my Q is, how do i know what plug in i'm using in E4 now? and how do i get the latest Raw Plugin for E4?..
and, will the latest ver, for E4 have.. recovery, fill, clarity and vibrance (i'm tweaking with the sliders i have at the mo' but it looks way cool to be able to hit those sliders on my overexposed backlit stuff).
OR.. should i just use Canons PPro that came with the camera?
(think i like the idea of using adobe, so i can just jump straight into editor after i'm done in raw...having said that, some of the versions on the utube tuts have clones and crops etc, etc,..that i think i'd probably not even need to go into editor for a large percentage of my work)
Anyhoo, Thanks in advance, if anyone can be of assistance:)

Right click a RAW file (CR2), and select Open With Elements.
When ACR is open, Press the F key (toggle Full screen). When the screen is not full screen, the title bar above you RAW image would be visible. The version number can be read in the title bar.
Then go to Adobe website, and grab the latest version for Elements 4.
See the below link in my signature: goodies
The easyist (argh that english is hard) way to open the RAW folder is to open the little program, which is also under my goodies link. When you have the latest ACR installed, you would see what it can do (sliders etc...)
About your "Canons PPro": Yes, you could use DPP instead!
I would suggest that you begin with installing the latest ACR.

Officially, the highest ACR file supported for Elements 4 is ACR version 3.7. In actual fact, PSE 4 will run ACR 4.1 just fine. The 4.1 version has the added advantages of the Vibrance and Clarity sliders which are lacking in version 3.7. Versions of ACR higher than 4.1 cannot be installed on PSE 4.

well, i did as you said Benny,
the toggle screen thing dosnt seem to work on my ver' but anyway i went on to adobe downloads from your goodies link and from that, i've established i had ver 3.2...the ungrade is ver 3.7, which i downloaded.
the good news is ..it downloaded ok..i installed it into the correct place (hopfully) and it works....
the not so good news is... it seems exactly the same as the previous version ie, no bells and whistles, Recovery, fill et'al..
What would happen if i downloaded a newish version (even tho' it isnt listed for E4) .
Looks like the newer stuff is written for Bridge etc i know, but would E4 ignore the stuff it dosnt use and just use the interface (he asks, more in hope than expectation)

I don't think Vibrance and Clarity and a couple of other sliders appear until much later versions. Not sure which version they appear, but I'm pretty sure its after 4.1, and probably not available in PSE4.

As others have said, the Vibrance/Clarity/Recovery stuff didn't appear until much later. You can't use the newer versions without a newer version of Elements, unfortunately.
We wish it were different, but that's the way Adobe does it.

Well. my version of Elements is PSE 4 and I am running ACR 4.1 just fine, and I know this is not unique to just my installation of PSE 4. I learned about the ability to run 4.1 in PSE 4 from advice offered at another forum. The Vibrance and Clarity sliders are definitely there in the lower portion of the ACR window. I am running PSE 4 under Windows and the 4.1 version of the Camera Raw.8bi file is in the File Formats sub folder of the Plug-Ins folder. If you are in Windows right click on your .8bi file and select Properties. Select the Version tab. It should indicate version 4.1.

I have defaced the photo file as I do not own the rights to it, but it is clearly displayed in ACR 4.1 and the Vibrance and Clarity sliders are there.

Hi Simenon,
just a thought, are you by any chance using (Premier) E 4 . i see on the Adobe d/load page it works on that.
altho' the path is different to the plugin folder ie-- plug-ins/common/psa
with E4 going to --plug-ins/file-formats..
I see your screenshot and thats the baby i'm after for sure...
I'm going to try again on my other 'puter..

Hi Stacy - I am delighted you have been able to get 4.1 to work for you, and no, I am not using Premier Elements 4 - just the plain old garden variety PSE 4.
I sure love the colorful language in your posts. Brings a smile to my normally somber face.
