My computer crashed and we had to reinstall Vista. I had a current PSE6 backup on an EHD as well as another computer on our network. In trying to restore the catalog after reinstalling PSE6, here's what happens...
I do "restore from hard drive", locate it and choose the backup.tly. Then if I choose Restore to original location, I get a warning about possible changes to existing file structure. I say yes to continue, but then it says it cannot restore to the original location because one or more drives do not match. It also says To restore the files to the default location "C:\Users\Sharon\Pictures\Adobe", click OK. To specify a different location, click Cancel and choose New Location in the Restore dialog. Should I do this or should I go back and restore it to a New Location? Also, will doing either one of these cause all of my pictures (>18,000) to need re-connecting? Ouch! Thanks in advance for any help!

When you do File > Restore, choose New Locatoin / Restore Original Folder Structure. This will restore your catalog to a new location, preserving your original folder structure but placing it underneath the location you choose. See this Adobe tech note for details:

Thank you! Another question about it, though, in that tech link that you gave me, a little lower down, it stated the following...

Important: On your new computer, a default installation of Photoshop Elements creates the Catalogs folder in the default location:

Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\Catalogs
Windows Vista: C:\Program Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\Catalogs
On my computer (with Vista), I have no catalog folder. Is that because of my PSE reinstall and the fact that I haven't done anything with it yet? Should I create a catalog folder there and restore my backup into it?
Thanks!
Sharon

You don't need to explicitly create a catalog folder. PSE will create one when you do the restore.

Hi Sharon ...

... and welcome to the Village :)

I think that it maybe better if you changed your username so that your email address isn't showing. Sometimes spambots search forums for addresses to harvest.

Thanks, Wendy, you're right! I'm not sure how that happened. I'm having trouble finding out HOW to change my user name, though. All I can find is how to change my email address or password.

Hi Sharon ...

Your could try emailing customer services and they will be able to do it for you ... or just sign up again with a new user name and stop using this one :)
