I have Nikon D40 and another question. I have read through the book that came with the camera and can not find the answer I need. Is there a way to set so the file numbers continue after you clear the memory card? I shot the first 400 or so photos and they numbered 1 through 400 and when I cleaned off the card, did not reformat it the second time, the numbers started over again at 1. I would like the numbers to continue in order. Is that possible? Point me to the right settings please.

Thanks Tina B

Here's a link to Ken Rockwell's D40 guide:

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40/users-guide/index.htm

Under the Setup Menu (wrench icon):

File No. Sequence
This ensures your file numbers keep counting up. Set this ON.
If you leave it at default you'll start from DSC_0001 every time you reformat (http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40/users-guide/menus-setup.htm#format). Over time you'll have hundreds of photos on your computer all called DSC_0001. It will drive you crazy if you ever try to use two of them in the same document and it will be too late to do anything about it.
Set it to ON, which should be the default but isn't.

Let me also plug a good book: The D40 Field Manual by David Busch.

I bought the D80 version and found it to be MUCH more informative than the manual that comes with the camera, which is dense and and terse. And, it's only $20 at Barnes and Noble or $13 + shipping at Amazon.

Highly recommended and worth every penny.

I value all the advice given here from everyone. I will look into the book and see if it is something that I would like to have.
