I raise my hand, Bill! What are the landlocked members to do? I guess there are turtle and nutshells for them!

Steven -

I'll meet you at Dan and Louis Oyster Bar and we can discuss other options over a dozen on the half shell.;)

Sounds good to me, Bill! Dan and Louis seems to have kept its nautical charm, unlike the Ivars in Seattle, which has Denny's decor now.

I found this old postcard awhile back. I take it The Church of Elvis is no more?

Dan and Louis is largely still Dan and Louis, that's sad that Ivar's succumbed to homogenization.

The 24 hour Church of Elvis closed it's brick and mortar doors a few years ago, and now exists in cyberspace only though Steven. Fairly new to the scene and proudly helping to keep Portland quirky is the Velveteria ... a 'museum' dedicated to black velvet art. It's a great place to spend a couple hours.

Deborah - There's no rule that a subject can only be used once. And I like your image a lot more than mine ... I'm glad you posted it!

Bill

edit
ps: FWIW, I had gone to a different Shell station first, gave the guy my credit card and told him I'm be taking some photos of his sign while he filled my tank. He told me I wouldn't be allowed to do that. I got my card back and told him I'd go to a different Shell station. I went down the street where they were fine with it ... and got the sale.

Bill and Deborah,

It's back to the drawing board for me! I had the same idea and then I scrolled down to see eveyone's take on the subject and saw that 'great minds think alike'!

Steven- orris root is from iris germanica, a parent of bearded iris and used in perfume and other stuff. Maybe that's what was in the decanter.

Byron- i hope you brought enough for everybody!

Lots of fine shells already.

dulittle - your image reminds me that it's been waaaay too long since my last "recoil therapy" treatment! :D

LindaS - You must have had your shutter set at 1/2000 or faster to freeze the action like that!!! :p

It probably goes without saying that I was shell shocked by the variety of this week’s images.

Helen – Thanks for getting us started with such a great image of a sand dollar. Everything about this one is great … the clarity of the image reveals the detail of the texture, the lighting is wonderfully soft and the DOF leaves the entire shell in focus. Great job.

Mary Lou – The colors are great and you have a good eye to have seen those and applied them to the theme. Well done.

Steven – The rich colors are wonderful and it’s fun to see the shells returned to their natural setting but displayed in a unique manner. The seaweed and barnacles tie it all in nicely.

Clara – What a great pose! S/he certainly looks to be enjoying some warming rays. Nice job framing to include the reflection. That’s a fun entry!

Deborah – I’m glad you posted your Shell station too. You got at great angle and your shot really makes it look like a lonely night on the road. Well done.

Sepiana – Thanks for posting your castanhas de cajú and the link. Your photo does a great job showing the details of the shell. It’s amazing how strong the shell must be. No wonder the dang cashew nuts are so expensive!

Byron – Snow crab at Joe’s?? It looks darn good. Steven and I are headed to Dan & Louis for oysters, ;) you’re welcome to join us and we’ll order up some crab too. Your second shot is a fun one too … very colorful, and what’s better than a musical turtle?

dulittle – Welcome to the photo themes … I’m glad you joined the fun. Great interpretation of the theme and a very nicely composed and shot image. Again, welcome. I hope you’ll join us on a regular basis.

Linda – No leash laws?? ;) I love the larger image on your blog … it really shows the shell’s texture nicely, and the critter itself is really beautiful. It’s fun to see the trail that s/he’s leaving behind … that’ll be a good way to recapture it if it escapes.

Lisa – What a fun, colorful image! I love the bits of colored stone in the grout that fills the spaces between the shells. Your story reminded me that my mom too had something like this. It was a sewing basket that had been similarly festooned in, er, treasures and collectables very similar to that. It’s a memory I’ll try to quickly release. ;)

Tony W– What a happy looking house. It seems to be quite please at the prospect of restoration. Nice interpretation of the theme and great work capturing it in full grin.

Toni – The warm colors of your image are very inviting, and you did a great job capturing the flames .. even the glowing red wick tips .. on the candles. Care to share your shooting and lighting technique??

Elaine – Great theme interpretation … I hadn’t even thought of pasta shells. You got a nice sharp shot and the colors of your background work very well with the box. Nice job!

Ellen – Good for you on not only thinking of crew shells, but finding some to shoot. It’s a great perspective … how in the world did you light it??

Tammy – Great shot showing the detail of the shell and the shallow DOF is fun as the nuts fade off in the distance. The colors of the bowl work very nicely in the image as well.

Doris – Nice interpretation of the theme and you did a nice job making a compelling image with a very simple subject. Your lighting technique worked perfectly … it’s proof that you don’t need to invest a lot of money to get nice results.

Good stuff so far this week folks and some wonderfully creative takes on the theme. There’s still time for more entries …

As always, your comments are at least half the fun of taking part in the Theme!

No - it's wasn't Joe's, but it was darn good! The thought of oysters has me feeling hungry, now... any chance of a bucket of steamers, too? ...and a couple of pitchers of something cold and hoppy.

I must confess to a bit of disappointment, though, regarding the whistle -- I though certainly you'd come up with "Tooter Turtle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tooter_Turtle)"! :p

Time for zis one to come home...

Good thinking! Sounds like most of the major food groups are represented.

Thanks, Bill, for all the comments. And also for giving us something every week to seek out. I really enjoy my pursuits of the challenge topics.

See you soon at Dan and Louis! Portland is never short of anything hoppy, so I think Byron will be happy!

Thanks Bill for your very kind comments. I'm away on holidays for a week and have just managed to get computer access. What do I look up first? The Elements Village of course:).

I took that image with just side light coming in through a large window. Of course I draped a black sheet over the coffee table. I also used a piece of white cloth opposite the window to throw some light back onto the subject. Technical people may say I used a 'reflector':) but to me it was just a piece of white cloth.

Thanks again for all you do for our photo theme each week.
