A couple of questions on techniques:
1)How do you freeze an end of a video clip (basically make it into a still)-that can be extended along the timeline add effects ect..?
2) I would like to make a split screen where I roll the credits on one side and have pictures and video scrolling on the other side. Would like to have both sides to have the same color back ground. Any ideas?

1) You can grab a frame from video (the last frame), that frame can then be stretched like any still image to any duration.

2) You can use a color matte

From the Premiere Elements 7 PDF Help details, you would appear to be in good shape for creating/editing/saving freeze frames to various formats, and using them in your video. I would caution you about clicking on the choice of "Insert in Movie" and ending up with your Timeline video split. If appropriate, try "Export" which will get a copy of the freeze frame into the media. From there you can place that in the Timeline as desired.
Unless I missed something, you asked about split screen effects, but I did not see any comments forthcoming on how to. Are you OK with that? I am surprised the CE did not offer the excerpt from his book on that. Even though that was done with Premiere Elements 2, you can get the idea from that what is involved in Premiere Elements 7 for your split screen.

With regard to what you want to do with split screen, were you going to have the video on one side filling its half or use that half as multiple pictures in pictures that you would a background behind?
I think that you will do fine experimenting and exploring, but, if you want and if you supply some details, I will work on the theme.
