Hi - and help. I have PSEv5.0 and ARCv4.5. I just moved from a D80 to a D90. When i use the PSE Photo Downloader (in-computer card reader) I get thumbnails for jpegs and AVI - but only the default blue 'thumbnail' for any NEF i have shot. At the top in the 'Get Photos from' drop-down i get only the D80 choice. I had no problems downloading NEFs from the D80.

How/where do i get whatever upgrade is necessary so that the Downloader and PSE recognizes the D90 NEFs?

Thanks in advance. elizabeth

You need to download and install Adobe Camera Raw 4.6:

Be sure to follow the manual installation instructions carefully.

Thanks, John. I have successfully downloaded v4.6. It is the version that comes up when i open previously downloaded NEFs. And when i put a D90 card into the card reader it opens into v4.6 and says 'get photos from' D90. BUT - it still only shows the default 'blue' thumbnails and the files don't download. The files are intact, because they 'read' on the monitor in the camera - but they don't come into PSE. hummm.

any help would be appreciated. elizabeth

Still no success re D90 NEF downloads to Organizer - but i have more info

- with help from johnrellis i got ARC 4.6 with D90 support loaded

- when i try to download the D90 NEFfiles in Photo Downloader I am still getting the blue 'stand in' thumbnails and am being told that the files aren't being imported in the Organizer. The files are, in fact, downloading to my hard drive. When i go to My Computer i can see real thumbnails and i can 'open with' the Editor from there

- they are not being imported into the Organizer. Even if i do a 'Files\get files from folder' command I get a 'not imorted' message

- I do have a working copy of ARC 4.6. It downloads files from the D80 fine and opens them for RAW processing.

I thought ARC 4.6 both supported the D90 AND worked in PSEv5.0. Am I missing a step. It seems like PSE - or at least the Organizer - won't recognize the D90 NEFs at all.

thanks for any help. elizabeth

Adobe Camera Raw 4.6 does indeed work properly with PSE5 and should read Nikon D90 .NEF files.

A common problem is that the installation was not done properly. The instructions say you should move the existing Camera Raw.8bi should be moved somewhere else. Some people just rename this to .8biold or something like that, and this usually fails to work. So, please try reinstalling again by actually deleting (or moving) any existing Camera Raw.8bi files (and any that used to be named Camera Raw.8bi).

Regarding thumbnails, without the proper Nikon codec, the Windows operating system does not display thumbnails of .NEF files. (And I believe that if you have Vista 64, there is no Nikon codec)

When you bought your D90 there is a cd that came with it that has nikon transfer on it. Download it and use it to get your pics. It will integrate with PSE. I use it all the time it also solves the thumbnail thing that some people have.

thank you both for the help. Paige, i had move it into an 'old raw' folder but left that folder in 'file formats'. That setup had worked fine last time i upgraded ARC. When you suggested looking again at the download of ARC I actually moved that 'old' folder out to the desktop and deleted the zipped download in preparation to download again. For some reason i decided to check my photo download again and it worked!! It shows proper thumbnails and imports them into the Organizer and opens them in the RAW editor. I ended up not downloading 4.6 again, but just moving stuff around. thanks for putting me on the right track.

and thanks, Dean, for the Nikon suggestion. i will keep that in mind if this solution breaks down.

I had moved it into an 'old raw' folder but left that folder in 'file formats'.

That's not an uncommon mistake that others have tripped over. As you've discovered, the Organizer loads plug-ins it discovers in subfolders (but confusingly, the Editor doesn't).

This is why I said to follow the download instructions carefully. But rereading them, they just say "Move the existing Camera Raw.8bi plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop)"; they don't say to avoid moving it to a subfolder.

I'll be sure to give more precise advice next time.

Thanks John. The 'ok with Editor/not ok with Organizer' did confuse me. The other thing that confused me was that with my last update (from ARC whatever to ARC 4.5) i was able to leave the new 'Old Camera Raw' folder I created as a subfolder. It worked fine. So i jauntily assumed it would work fine for the 4.5 to 4.6 update. Live and learn.

thanks for your help. elizabeth
