This week's theme could be viewed as an extension of last week's, or you could choose to go in a completely different direction. The theme is Monuments or Memorials.

For those taking part in the 365 blogs, this is a potential two-fer!

Everyone is invited to participate.
Because the purpose of the weekly theme is to get us more familiar with our cameras and to sharpen our photographic skills, entries should be taken during the week of the theme.
Photoshopping is allowed.

The young people who died here are missed very much by their peers and the community.

One of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War was the Battle of Allatoona Pass fought on October 5, 1864. Sherman had already captured Atlanta and the Confederate army was trying to close this major railway pass and cut off supplies to the Union army. A few days after the battle a strange box was shipped into the depot in Allatoona. It was left alone for two days and two nights until some women who worked at the depot opened the box to find the badly decomposed remains of a Confederate soldier. The women buried the soldier and the railroad later erected this monument to remember him. The burial site is said to be haunted.

Every year on Memorial Day the grounds of a Portland Mausoleum are opened to the public. For 90 minutes on that day the doors to a private tomb are also opened.

An inscription on the leaded glass panel sums up the occupants feelings about what must have been a fine ride.

Here's a link (http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2009/05/secrets_scandal_entombed_in_po.html) to the story if you'd like to read more about the tombs occupants.

I was actually quite surprised to see a fresh wreath of poppies at the base of this war memorial....usually they don't appear until November 11th (Armistice Day)

I took a drive down to my closest memorial after work today. It was already dark, and the moon was out, but in the wrong place for me to capture it so I added one of my own.

And couldn't resist posting this one as well. It would have been a good one for the 'mistakes' theme a couple of weeks ago.

Some of us from the genealogy society have recently completed research into all the names. The 7 WWII men were easier to do - some still have relatives in the area. We had a much more difficult time with the WWI men. Two of them we have not been able to identify as having been with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, let alone any connection to Campbell River. It was an exciting experience to "bring them to life" for the community.

Cheers,
Helen

The monument of James Marshall pointing to the water, who's discovery of gold at Sutters Mill on the American River in Coloma , California led to the largest migration of people in the history of the world......"Go west young man...the gold is just laying there waiting to be picked up and the dreams of many a man started ."

Some may remember my bookcase from Photo Challenge 183. The shelf above that is the memorial space for cats that are gone. Here lies Chester, Eddie, Emily, Mr. Putz and Ruby in their urns, and little mementos of their past lives. I started to run out of space in the garden for burials, and it made transplanting plants a challenge.

And my Archie Comic still sits on the shelf below!

This memorial is to the Battle of Mortimer's Cross of 1461, part of the Wars of the Roses. The monument dates from 1799.

Not as moving as most posted but a nice gesture just the same.
I was walking around the bay in Hamilton today and they have all these benches to sit and look out over the water.
All have plaques in memory of various loved ones and I thought it was a nice way to be remembered.

Bill, sorry for being so late. The weather wasn't cooperating. Today I was finally able to drive to O'Fallon, Missouri to take a photo of the Veterans Memorial Walk. 64 cast bronze boots are positioned as if marching. The 65th pair of boots is absent from the ranks. It’s positioned at the foot of the POW/MIA flag and to the front of an eternal flame in remembrance of American soldiers missing in the field. At the back of the marching boots there are 5 monoliths, each representing a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.

I know I'm late, but have had a sick family member this week. :( However, I did manage to run up to a local park this week for my first try at taking pictures at night.(because I had no time during the day ;)) The park is a memorial covering the Civil War, Korea, Vietnam and WW I and II. It was too dark to get all the memorials, but I was shocked to see any of my pictures came out as I had it on a real slow shutter speed. - 1/5. I thought they would just be a blur as my camera was handheld. Happily they weren't.

The inscription on the bottom of the Civil War memorial is:

"The man who does not dread to die or be mutilated is a lunatic. The man who, dreading these things, still faces them for the sake of duty and honor is a hero". Sorry, I didn't get the author.

Thanks for the challenge!
