Well that helps me -- since I'm still considering another lens other than the kit one provided with my Digital Rebel. At least I'm going to shop with a more informed concept. Thanks for the info.

Grant,
Thank you for the link. I'd like to get a memory card or three. I don't need more than 2 lenses. :)

I took time out from lens shopping to catch up on posts. Glad I did - but still may opt for at least one good IS lens for my Digital Rebel XT. With my shakes I'm having a bit of trouble getting really sharp shots without a tripod. Thanks for the link.

Grant,
Thanks for the link. Very imformative.
However, this does go against the "The boy with the most toys wins" philosophy of life.

Nancy -- I am sure Gary would love a pair of those socks. LOL

I am not sure if Gary would like them but I would.
Now back to the topic at hand. "I am about to buy my last lens ...cough cough splutter!" he says straight faced. Yes even though I didn't need it I want it. The only reason I haven't got it now is that I am not sure if I really want it or ... some days I want a set of kick a$$ zoom lenses and other days I want a modest set of prime lenses. If I can't make up my mind I may end up with both. Soooo ... ladies and gentlemen please wrestle me to the ground and beat some sense into me.

Grant-
I'm still wrestling with the lens thing myself. I just got my camera but the kit lens is less than impressive although it does okay with a tripod. My shake issue is driving me to covet one of the IS lenses from Canon. I think I can really justify it because I need to be able to use my new camera - right? Seriously - I will definitely get a good quality moderate range lens and a macro but the huge zoom is probably not ever going to be in my future but then neither is much of an opportunity to use one. Zoos and cat sanctuaries are just not the place to use them and landscapes usually require wide angle. The only other thing is family functions and I just can't imagine why I would want a close up of my brothers belly button lint  or my uncles nose hair  - which is about all I could get with a super zoom lens.

Yikes! good point there, lint and nose hair not a good thing....I have a telephoto lens that is great for capturing the chatter boxes in my trees tho:)

Here's great site for reviews of Nikon lens, if you decide you really need and can afford one that is.

I just bought the new Canon 24-105 F4L IS lens. it is an f/4 lens but it is claimed that it gives you 3 stops of shutter speed. I have not used it enough to confirm that since I just got it.
It is a big lens as you might expect as compared to the kit lens and you lose the difference between 18 and 24 mm (effectively 28 and 38 mm respectively given the 1.6 lens factor). So you should probably keep your kit lens for those wider shots.
The reviews of this lens as compared to the tried and true 24-70 2.8 LU lens are very good even though the 20-70 is an f/2.8 lens. Many of the reviewers I read suggest that the trade offs make it just as good as the 24-70 2.8 LU. The downside is the cost. It is going for $1249 right now without any rebate available. Still that is cheaper than the 24-70 LU lens at over $1300.

Bill, that's quite a lens! I opted for the cheaper route to cover most of that range; my 28-135 f 3.5-5.6 IS is in the UPS system on its way to me. Of course, it can't be compared to your lens, but I'm hopeful that it will cover most of my needs in the normal-to-medium telephoto range.

Bill,
That's an awesome lens. Wish I could afford one - would have come in handy today when trying to photograph the eagles that migrate here in the winter months.
