I am making a video that I want to be in black and white. When I add the B/W effect, the clip becomes blurry. In the clip children are holding white signs with large black lettering. The clips are fine when in color, but the text and their faces become blurry when the B/W effect is added. I tried flicker removal and it did not help much. I am using premiere elements 4.

I am not at my home computer right now. I will return later this evening.

Here are my questions:

1. You say that you are working with the Black & White Effect in Premiere Elements 4. What is the source, format, and duration of the video clip to which you are trying to apply the effect. What is the project preset that you set for Premiere Elements 4? Do you have "Default scale to frame size" checked under Edit Menu/Preferences/General?

2. Have you attempted to edit the effect under Edit Effects in the program?

3. Is "blurry" = flickering, blur, or something else? Does this problem exist for more videos than the current one?

4. After you apply the B & W Effect to the video, do you render the Timeline by pressing the Enter on your computer's main keyboard? That will give you the best possible preview of the end product. I am assuming that you are viewing in the Monitor of the program's Edit Mode. If you right click the Monitor and select Magnification, what is the set for the Magnification, Fit, 100%, or other?

To be continued.....

Thanks for reporting on your results.

That Rendering the Timeline by pressing the Enter (while in Edit Mode of the program) gets you the best possible preview of what the end product is going to look like.

It is especially useful if you are bringing titles, effects, transitions and non DV AVI content to the Timeline. It can be time consuming, but worthwhile to catch any unsuspected problems. And, it will deposit preview files on your hard drive. If hard drive space is an issue, you might want to consider directing your scratch files (preview files) to an external hard drive.

Please keep us updated on your progress.
