I haver a trial version of PSE 7 with 21 days to go before expiry. I have 20,000+) photos in a single catalogue taken on various digital cameras with date characterics switched on.

I need to arrange / sort all 20, 000 photos chronologically by date in the order they were captured - oldest first. The photos are in various folders and sub-folders corresponding to different transfers from the cameras.
Q. How do I do it? Is the trial version fully functional?

When you start PE7, choose Organize.

The default for displaying the Thumbnail area of the Organize screen is to have the Most Recent photos display first (date (newest first)).

You can change that to have the thumbnail area display
Date (Oldest first).I think that this is what you want.

-- Above the thumbnail area, there is a bar where you can probably identify the slider which controls the thumbnail size.
--To the right of that thumbnail slider you should see Date(Newest First). Immediately to the right of those Newest First words there is a down triangle for a pull down box: you may have to look very carefully to see that down triangle because on many monitors the contract between that triangle and the surrounding area is very poor.
--Click on that down triangle and you will see the choice to change to Date(Oldest First).

Be aware that the sequence of display will be dependent on the time having been set correctly in the photo file Fortunately if some files are incorrect there are commands in the PSE Organizer which can make corrections to that information.

Glad that it helped solve your dilemma, welcome to Elements Village and thanks for the feedback.

I am guessing that you may be new to the Photoshop Elements Organizer - so I have a suggestion - go to

http://www.adobe.com/support/photoshopelements/

That Adobe web page has some tutorials on PS Elements

AND in the upper right section of that page there is a PDF symbol and the words Photoshop Elements for Windows Help (printable). You can download that PDF file to your PC/laptop and then use the Adobe Reader to view its topics or you can search that PDF file. Sometimes I find it beneficial to read or browse a topic in that PDF file in order to get the "big picture" for a PSE function that I have not previoulsly used.
