I know this must be a basic question...I've searched the help files and came up empty.

I have a video track running along video 1, and I have stills running along video 2 from time to time.

I want to fade away from the video on track 1 (leaving the audio), while the stills on track 2 are faded in...then after the stills are done, I fade away from them, and fade back in to the video 1 track.

I know how to "fade in" and "fade out" (either with both audio and video or one or the other), but when I play the "main video" (is there a term for that?)

1) The audio from track one continues (good)

2) The screen is just black...I'm not seeing the stills from video 2 (bad).

Help please?

Thanks so much...

What version of Premiere Elements are you using?

Just how are you doing the fade in and fade out and to what are you applying it?

You can apply fade in and fade out two ways:
a. highlighting file on Timeline, opening Properties Palette, going to the Opacity Panel there and clicking Fade In and Fade Out
or
b. righting click the Timeline content and select Fade In. Then do Fade out.

Are you doing either and is it to the video on Video Track 1 or the individual photos on Video Track 2? Are you throwing any keyframing of the Opacity with the Toddle Animation Button in Properties Opacity?

At this point I need some clarification. But, I am suspecting that somewhere along the line you may have the Opacity Slider in the Properties Opacity moved down to 0%.

But, let us see what your further details point to.

To be continued....
