View Full Version : Quick Time Pro Fast Start

Folks, I realize that this is not exactly a new thread, but the problem is--somewhat. Here's the whole story starting at the beginning:
I edited a 3-1/2 minute wedding video demo in Premiere 7. I saved ("shared") it to my computer as a Quick Time file. I embeded the following code into an html document:
<OBJECT classid='clsid:02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B' width="320" height="256" codebase='http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab'> <param name='src' value="monademo.mov"> <param name='autoplay' value="true"> <param name='controller' value="true"> <param name='loop' value="false"> <EMBED src="monademo.mov" width="320" height="256" autoplay="true" controller="true" loop="false" bgcolor="#000000" pluginspage='http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/'> </EMBED> </OBJECT>
Then I up loaded it to my website. It played very nicely but it took 45 to 50 seconds to load. It was recommended that I purchase Quick Time Pro, which I did.
I then followed the instructions on "Preparing a movie for Fast Start" located on the Adobe website at: http://www.support.apple.com/kb/HT2438
In the progress window the bar fills across and then I get the message: Error-36: an I/0 error occurred.
Please help. If anybody should visit my website at:
http://www.kandhweddingphotography.com please let me know how long it takes to load on your computer.

That is actually the Apple web site Henry, but at what point in the process do you get the error?

What did you do?
There were two black boxes seen at the web site, one just black to the left and to the right one with the QuickTime logo in it.
The QuickTime logo never gave way to a video; whereas, after 1 to 2 minutes the black box on the left gave way to your video.

I then followed the instructions on "Preparing a movie for Fast Start" located on the Adobe website at: http://www.support.apple.com/kb/HT2438
The above link did not work. Any place else I can look to see the instructions that you followed.

Chuck, the instructions say:
1. Open your movie in Quick Time Player. (Did that)
2. From the File menue choose Export. (Did that)
3. From the Export pop-up menue, choose Movie to Quick Time Movie. (Did that)
4. Click Options and select any video and sound compression options appropriate for web delivery. (It does not tell you what video and sound compression options are appropriate for web delivery; and I don't know so I made NO changes.
5. Make sure the "Prepare for Internet Streaming" check box is selected and that fast start appears in the pop-up menue. (It did.)
6. Click ok, then Save. (I did.)
A progress panel then appears and a color bar begins to move across it. To me it appears to go all the way over. In any case, that is when the following appears:
Error-36: an I/0 error accourred
Chuck, any help you can give me will sure be appreciated.

ATR, the black box on the left if for Windows Media Player. I'm still working on that. Quick Time on the right can take as long as 50 seconds to load. If I can get Quick Time to load faster I'll probably delete the WMP.

I kept getting the page not found for the Apple link that you posted.
I found the page online and am reading it now and comparing it against your description. I am not sure why I kept getting that message from your link. But, not important, since I have the article now and am reading it.
I will be back before calling it a day.

In my online rush to find some answers, I came across your call for help at Adobe (Marion). Did not see any latest responses from her.
Did you use the settings/Filter/Size as shown in the Apple Link?
Why do you not call it a day and start fresh tomorrow?

ATR, I did a little work on the site.
You will now see two black boxes.
Also, I changed it from "autoplay."
You now must click on either of the triangles to make them play.
It sometimes takes 50 seconds for the Quick Time on the right to play.
But, at least, unlike the WMP on the left, it play all the way through the demo.

Quick Time on the right can take as long as 50 seconds to load. At least it plays all the way through the demo, unline the WMP which only plays part way through. But I can fix that in Premiere 7.

Is the Error message gone? Is that issue taken care of?
The black box to the left (.wmv) opens so fast automatically, but the quality/clarity of the video is not as good as the black box to the right (.mov) which takes over a minute to open and opens when it wants to.
Can we conclude yet that the Quicktime Pro Fast Start feature did not make a dent in the loading time for the .mov file?
I will wait for your response and then close down for the night.

I want to publicly express my thanks to RJ Johnston over at muvipix for solving my Quick Time fast start problem.
Also, I want to thank everybody on this forum for all of your input. It helped lead the way to my success. I have gathered a wealth of information here. I hope that in return I will be able to help somene in trouble like me.
If interested, you might note that on my site I have both Quick Time and Windows Media Player on the same page; thus giving the viewer a choice. I still need to ad explanatory copy, but the thing for you to note is the superior quality of the Quick Time movie over the WMP.
You might also note that the WMP movie is not complete. From Premiere 7 it only loaded about 3/4s of the movie.
Another problem! Oh well!

This morning I found your goods new, great news. It did not come as a surprise that it was Robert Johnston who offered the critical key to resolution. I have often found him to be a helpful, innovative, and talented contributor at the Premiere Elements User to User Forum at Adobe.
At Adobe and elsewhere, I went looking for the dialog between you and Robert Johnston to determine what was the primary factor creating the Quicktime Pro Fast Start failure/error. I did not find it. Could you supply the link? But, while doing this searching, I found a new link dealing with Quicktime Pro (I think it is new?)
http://motionographer.com/encoding-video-for-the-web-with-quicktime-pro/
was the answer contained in this link?
However, it is 8:30 am (USA East Coast Time), and I just went to your web site to check out the latest developments and found:
a. both the .wmv and the .mov version open right away
b. the quality of both .wmv and .mov are acceptable, but that of the .mov is superior/sharper
c. the .wmv opens right away AND also plays through to what looks like ¾ of the way (you noted that before and said that you could fix that)
d. the .mov opens right away BUT plays for a few seconds and then hangs up as you can see it being slowly loaded (takes a long time with my high speed DSL)
As a viewer to the site, it is very frustrating to see immediately a few seconds of .mov video and then have to wait around for the rest of the loading before the view moves passed the few seconds of .mov video. Unless, I am missing something, I would fine tune the .wmv version and focus on it. What is the size of the .wmv versus the .mov version?
I would appreciate your further comments to bring closure to this thread and dot the i’s and cross the t’s for others who find your thread online.
Thanks.

The rest of the story....
First, I did find the online dialog between you and Robert Johnston. Was the key renaming the Save in Quicktime Pro?
Now about my viewing of your web site videos this morning. I just tried it again and got the same results, that being:
1. video for .wmv and .mov versions appeared rapidly...there was no visible play button (controls) for the .wmv...although there was a play button for the .mov, you did not have the opportunity to use it since it went into an autoplay...comments were as before (too long a wait time to watch the .mov although it opened first few seconds of video rapidly)
HOWEVER....those observations were from me viewing your web site videos from my default browser, Firefox 2.0.0.20.... Just now I switched to Internet Explorer (6) to watch the videos at your site and received some amazing results.
a. both videos (.wmv and .mov) now both displayed controls...there was no autoplay for either...you had to press the play button for either to play its respective video....in each case, the uninterrupted playback began immediately after pressing the play button....remarkable success with Internet Explorer, but not Firefox. If you can confirm my observations, it might be a good idea for a note at our web re: preferred browser?
You might want to consider look into any browser issues impacting continued success of your web site presentations.

Regarding the instructions given at:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2438 (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2438)
The "Export" feature used in that method is ok if you are working from a DVD or some other EXTERNAL source.
But if you are working with a movie already on your hard drive, that method will NOT work.
I am preparing a rundown on how all this was accomplished (with the help from a lot of people) and will post it soon.
Meanwhile you can see the final product at:
http://www.kandhweddingphotography.com
Note: I am working in IE and I am told that it works and plays a little differently in Firefox.

Thanks for the update. That "works and plays a little differently in Firefox" is an oversimplification. Firefox is just not user friendly for your web site .mov...at least with my default browser, Firefox. If you had been using Firefox as your browser instead of Internet Explorer, you would now be thinking that you were still nowhere with your issue.
I will be looking forward to your details of the procedure that worked for you.

Just checking...
Since you have already thanked Robert Johnston several times in this thread for being the key to solving your Quicktime Fast Start web site video issue, did you really want to post your last post?
When I saw there was a new post from you in this thread, I opened it, expecting the detailed account of your video to web site experience since you did say that you intended to post that. Did you post this additional acknowledgment of gratitude to Robert Johnston when you intended to post the details that you offered?
I know that you must be a busy photographer and business man, so, if and when are ready, the Premiere Elements community will be grateful for your contribution.

First off, please forgive the double posts re my thanks to RJ. Obviously I am as dumb about using forums as I am about embeding videos. I'm just to quick to push "Submit Reply" buttons, I guess.
With that out of the way, here are the steps I used to embed video into an html document and get it to load "fast start." I hope it proves useful to somebody. In IE it seems to work OK, even in Firefox; however there appears to still be a bit of an issue when using Firefox. My next effort will be to make it more Firefox compatable.
Here are the steps I used, touching on the FOUR main problems that arose along the way:
Note: To do this you must have Quck Time Pro ($30.00), a bargan just for the quick start feature alone. I shot the movie using a Sony VX2000 NTSC. I edited the movie in Premiere 7 and "shared" as a Quick Time movie to my hard drive.
First: I inserted the following code into my html page for a Quick Time movie.
<OBJECT classid='clsid:02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B' width="320" height="256" codebase='http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab'>
<param name='src' value="../VideoProductions/Weddings/MonaDongray/monademoqtp.mov">
<param name='autoplay' value="false">
<param name='controller' value="true">
<param name='loop' value="false">
<EMBED src="../VideoProductions/Weddings/MonaDongray/monademoqtp.mov" width="320" height="256" autoplay="true"
controller="true" loop="false" bgcolor="black" pluginspage='http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/'>
</EMBED>
</OBJECT>
Be sure to get the paths and links correct for your particular content.
SECOND: After inserting the code, I still could not see any thing on my page.
The background color of my page is dark blue. And since the background color in the above code was ORIGINALLY dark blue, of course I could not see anything. As you can see in the above code, I changed the background color (in the code to black). After which, a nice black square appeard on my page against its dark blue background.
THIRD: The QT control bar did not show.
I increased the height from the original 240 to 256 (increase by 19 works). This made room for the control bar which then showed up nicely.
FOURTH: Fast start (the really hard part until you get it figuered out.
My first mistake:
I was advised to go to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2438 (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2438) and follow the instruction found there under the heading: "Preparing a movie for Fast Start" which reads as follows:
1. Open your movie in Quick Time. (I did.) A "Movie Setting" window appears.
2. From the File menue, choose Export. (I did). That was a mistake as I shall explain.
3. From the Export pop-up menue, choose Movie to Quick Time Movie. (I did).
4. Click Options and select any video and sound compression options appropriate for web delivery.
It gives you no hint as to what those settings should be. Because I did not fully understand these and still don't, I just left them at the default settings. Maybe someone smarter than I will explain these.
5. Make sure the "Prepare for Internet Streaming" check box is selected and that Fast Start appears in the pop-up menue. (I did).
6. Click OK, then click Save. (I did)
Right away I got this error message:
Error-36" an I/0 error occurred.
It was making me crazy! What had I done wrong?
Here's what:
If you were working from a movie on a disk, choosing the "Export" feature as in the above instructions it MIGHT work. But my movie was already on my hard drive. What I should have done and finally did:
Instead of choosing "Export" choose "Save as."
The catch here is that when you choose "save as" be sure to change the name of the movie. Otherwise it will not work.
All's well that ends well!
If you would like to check out my results go to:
http://www.kandhweddingphotography.com (http://www.kandhweddingphotography.com/)
Note that on the same page--in addition to Quick Time--I have included Windows Media Player; thus giving the viewer a choice.
If anyone goes there please tell me how long it takes to load. And let me know which browser you are using: IE or Foxfire? And please inform me of any problems you have, especially if you are using Firefox.

Thanks for that great writeup and taking the time to post/share the procedure that brought you success. Much praise is due Robert Johnston for making all this possible for you with his knock out troubleshooting suggestion(s). He is very gifted and generous with sharing his knowledge with others at various web site locations.
I continue to have problems with your web site videos, using my Firefox browser (version 2.0.0.20): no controls for the .wmv version, no auto play of it, just a black box ; controls with .mov, starts playback fairly rapidly without having to press Play Button, hangs up while viewing and loading.
Using my Internet Explorer 6, I find that both videos on your web site have controls, both are functional, and work as you intended.
I keep getting messages from Firefox recommending that I upgrade from Firefox 2.0.0.20 to 3 as well as Microsoft Updates urging me to upgrade from Internet Explorer 6 to 8. If and when I decide to do so, I will let you know how your .wmv and .mov videos on your web site work with those browser versions.
Thanks again and congratulations on a good job of follow through and execution.

Now I gotta make the whole thing Firefox compatable.
Once I learn how to do that.

Should probably say 'easier' with Dreamweaver, not necessarily 'easy'.
Other than the price it is a great option, not really much to the learning curve, HTML with a WYSIWYG interface plus a whole lot more. You can learn as much or as little as you need to.

You have just been through the wars, so I can understand why you may not want to add Dreamweaver to your to do list.
BUT, when and if you do, Adobe does seem to offer a free Dreamweaver tryout
http://www.adobe.com/downloads/
AND…there is this article on Dreamweaver and its Browser Compatibility Check that does sound tempting….
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/browser_check.html
Whatever the case, although there are more browsers in the world besides
Internet Explorer and Firefox, sooner or later I will let you know if upgrading my versions of these browsers improved my viewing of your web site videos.
