View Full Version : Another organizer raw files import problem

I am another person having problems importing Canon cr2 raw files (Canon 40d) into PSE 6 Organizer. In this case, the laptop runs on Vista. Windows will import them into the explorer just fine (totally not involving PSE in any way) and when PSE itself downloads the files from the CF card, it will store them on the drive sorted properly as it should. PSE just will not bring them into the Organizer. The error says something to the effect that the file appears to be corrupt or not supported. I have updated the ACR to 5.1 so I know the version should not a problem.
Incidently, as PSE will sort and store the CR2 images just fine (again, just not import them into Organizer), the files can be opened perfectly fine in the editor afterwords. All without the ability to import them from the card or harddrive into Organizer.
In case it helps, the only Canon specific 40d software downloaded to the Windows laptop was Canon's own RAW driver software for windows.
As a side note, I also have PSE 6 for OSX running on my Macbook and all is perfectly fine with the 40d imported files. Furthermore, the Windows laptop is also fine with the older 20d body when files are imported.
Any advice would be appreciated. I have already searched this site's forums as well as the internet and so far no luck other than the ACR version suggestion. The older ACR version files have been completely removed from the Plugins directory to another directory on the drive so conflict between the 2 versions are also unlikely. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

That error message is a likely indicator that ACR is improperly installed -- it's quite easy to make a mistake with the manual installation.
To verify which version of ACR the Editor is loading, go to the Editor and do Help > System Info. Cut and paste the entire contents here.
To verify which version of ACR the Organizer is loading (it's quite possible it is loading a different version), paste the contents of the Organizer's Log.txt file here. See this FAQ:

Hmm, the logs show that the Editor is loading ACR 5.1 and that the Organizer is loading the same version.
Incidently, as PSE will sort and store the CR2 images just fine (again, just not import them into Organizer)
What do you mean that it will "sort and store" even though the images aren't imported into the Organizer? PSE can't sort or store photos unless they're in the Organizer.
What is the precise message you get when you try to do File > Get Photos And Videos > From Files And Folders to import a CR2 file?

The photos are properly copied from the CF Card/Camera onto the harddrive in PSE's photos directory sorted by date as any of the pictures should be. They just are not loaded into Organizer so they can be displayed onscreen like the rest of the photos already in organizer.
Well, all is well now. :) Perhaps this is why I am a Mac lover/user  and I leave the Windows usage to my wife. I deleted the existing junk photos (off the CF card) I was having trouble with, took a few more sample photos and now all is well and finally co-operating. However, the other 3 or 4 times I tried importing them since upgrading ACR to 5.1 yesterday, it wouldn't co-operate. Perhaps the files were genuinely corrupt on the card or something. Perhaps the card itself is dying (hope not).
Anyhow, for some oddball reason, everything works now. I do thank you very much for your time, patience and assistance. 8 years as a computer technician and network admin (on Windows) and still Windows surprises me sometimes.
