I have figured out how to erase a background of a still group shot. What I can't figure out is how to replace the checkered back drop with a standard color or something. I see the layers option, but I can't figure out how to color the layer before I send it to the back. Call me stupid .. can anyone help?

First, you need to double click on the layer name "Background" in the layer panel and when the dialog opens to change the name, just hit OK and accept the default. The "Background" layer, by it's very name is a special layer that must be at the bottom of the layer stack, and since you already started erasing some of it, we need to mover a new blank layer tot he bottom, underneath it.
Once renamed, add a new layer, either by clicking the new layer icon (little square with the turned corner), or go tot he Layer Menu. Once you add a new layer, drag it to the bottom, below your edited layer, then fill the bottom layer with a color of choice.
