View Full Version : my video takes too long to load

I have a short three and half minute demo video on my wedding photography website.
I edited it in Premeiere 7.
I put it on my website by embeding code into my html document.
480x720 px
It runs ok, but takes nearly a full minute to load in Quick Time.
I don't think many people are going to wait a full minute for a demo to load.
Is there anything I can do to speed up the load time?
If anyone would care to check it out the link to my wedding website is:
Los Angeles Wedding Photography, Long Beach, Orange County (http://www.kandhweddingphotography.com/)
Any advice would be sincerely appreciated.

Like last time when we did succeed in the goal, no hands on experience with your video/web site questions, however....

Can you decrease the file size of the video?

Not sure about this, but can you setup so that the movie plays when the viewer clicks on the Play Button, rather than have an auto start?

Check out the following link to see if you can use any of its ideas:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/refmovies.html

Let me know how that all turns out. If not, we will see what else we can uncover.

Add On....

Did you check with your server (host) to make sure that this is not a server video delivery issue?

It took me over 2 minutes to load the video, and you are right, many people will not wait that long. It loads the entire movie before it starts playing, that is part of the problem. You need to have it buffer a % and start playing before it is finished loading. That is done in the code for the embed player I believe, Ron at Muvipix could give you a hand with that if you need some help with the code.

The other thing is your host, I don't think the server you are on is very fast.
The video is only 15mb and 320 x 256, should load quicker than that with a DSL or Cable connection. But I think if you have the video start playing before it is completely loaded that will solve your problem.

Hope this helps

Suggest that you check with your server first.

Thanks for your help folks.
I checked with my host (Go Daddy). The tech guy assured me that it was 15 mg. He seemed to feel that that was a large file and, therefore, would take a long time to load. Yet I see other sites with videos with mg that big and they load faster. Some of them are, of course, "true" streaming, but mine is not.

I am going to try Ron at Movipex (spelling ?)

Chuck, any suggestions on how I can get it to start playing before it is completely loaded as you suggest?

I changed the code so that it does NOT autoplay, but problem remains.

http://muvipix.com/phpBB3/

will take you to the community forums at muvipix where you can register and either post a new thread where you address Ron in the thread title or send a Private Message to Ron (Ron is his userid)

There are multiple forums in the muvipix community. Which forum you choose is not essential because multiple people monitor all of those forums for new posts. Since yours is more of a general question, you could enter it under the Water Cooler forum.

I am pretty sure it is a setting in the embedded player but Ron will know the answer. Could be that you need to switch to FLV format rather than MOV, he will be able to give you good advice on what will work best for you.

GoDaddy is not a high performance web service as you can probably tell by the price. The sites that have their own server can better serve video and audio to their customers. I have used Yahoo for years without any problems and video loads pretty quick, http://www.chuckengels.com/PremierVideo/index.html cost is $40 per month but worth it, probably a bit more than you are spending at GoDaddy.

Muvipix pays over $200/month for our web server, but the speeds are excellent and we service 1000's of people a day with Uploads, downloads, audio and video, lots going on.

If you do follow up at the other web site, please let us know the outcome and what fine tuning was suggested and what elaboration was offered on the principles that we started on here.

Henry -

What was the solution? I'm sure other members here would like to know how you fixed it, so that they know what to do when they run into the same problem.

best,
Rick

I believe the final fix was to open the file in Quicktime Pro and then do a 'Save As' using a new name. That will then set the Fast Start option properly in the new file.

That is how I read one of the reports from Henry1. But, at all of the web sites where he posted his question, and there were many, he has promised to write of the details and post them for others to follow along from start to end.

I am looking forward to his detailed report.
