I have photoshop elements 5.0 and I keep on running into the same problem while searching on how to fade one image to another... The Mask Tool..... I have even searched the help provided in my program and all it says there is that there is something similar called the fill layer... However, when I use the gradient fill layer, all I get is a black and white gradient (when I picked black to transperant) that covers my selected layer.

So as asked many times before, yet not answered for me... how do you make one image fade into the background gradually?

I.C.,

You will need three layers: the two image layers and, between them, a color-to-transparent gradient.

The trick is to then Group the upper image layer to the gradient layer. This "clips" the image layer so that its visibility is determined by the presence of color on the gradient layer.

Post back if you need more detail.

For this picture I did the following:

Duplicate image layer

Create blank layer filled with white between these layers

On top layer, make selection with oval marquee tool, position with arrow keys

Go to Select>inverse, Select>feather>25px. Experiment with this value

Hit delete on keyboard
