Some of you will remember last year I had a Robin's nest in our front tree. This year there is a Robin in the same tree, in the same nest! Do Robin's return from year to year making their nest in the same location?

Last year I discovered the nest before there were any eggs in the nest on May 10th. This afternoon (May 3rd) I saw mamma in the nest. When I got my camera to take some photos she flew off and I saw 3 eggs in the nest. Later she returned and I did not get as close so I could get a photo of her in the nest.

The bad thing is my Canon XSi is in the Doctor's office getting a check-up so I have to use my older Olympus camera. I am real glad I still have that!

EDIT: photos in the EV Gallery

Hi Charles,

I was wondering if we were going to see a Robin's Nest 2009 series because, yes, robins do return to the same nest. And 3 eggs are the common number of eggs they lay -- the mother robin is on target.:)

The images are wonderful. I'm looking forward to seeing more. Keep us updated!

BTW, if you're interested, check this site for everything you ever want to know about robins:

That's one reason why removing a bird's nest - even if it appears to be abandoned - is illegal under the provisions of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. At least in the US, Canada, and Mexico...

Great shot, Charles! Hope you can get some pics of the babies later on, with their mouths wide open.

Sepiana,

I am glad you knew the answer to the question I had about Robins. I wondered early on if I would see a Robin in that tree again. I was thrilled when I saw mamma laying in the nest! Thank you

Chuck,

Only YOU would know anything like this about birds! (At least in this forum!:D)

Late last year I had thought about removing the nest, but now I am glad I did not do that, so mamma would return, and so I would not be going to JAIL!!

Roln,

Did you see my photos I took last year? They are still in my gallery showing the babies with their mouths wide open wanting to be fed!

I have not checked the nest since last Sunday. When I went out this morning I found the nest was cocked about 45 degrees in the tree and no eggs in the nest. :(

I have no idea how this happened but I was not happy. After church this morning my wife and I met our youngest daughter and her husband for a Mother's Day meal then went to their home for a while. When we came home we saw the nest was no longer in the tree but now it is in the street. The only thing I can surmise is it must have been neighbor kids that did this, at least getting the nest from the tree to the street. Since the nest was empty today why would any animal (other than human) mess with the nest.

I took a couple photos this morning. Forgive the first photo. My brain was not functioning. I should have used my flash but I never thought of doing that until it was too late. I used levels in Elements to be able to see the nest. I took this photo to show how low the nest is to the ground.

I suspect next year mamma Robin will find a new place (and safer!) to put her nest..... which means I won't find it. :(

Poor mama robin. That's too bad you found the nest in the street. Hope she finds a safer place.

Hi Charles,

That's very bad news. But keep an eye next year. Mama robins will come back to the same nesting situation. It may be the same tree but a different branch, or may be another tree or bush nearby.
