View Full Version : Premiere Elements 7.0 will not load project

Hello,

I am using Premiere Elements for the first time for a fairly simple movie. I did have Elements 2.0 at one point but just started using 7.0 I recently completed the project (or just about) and suddenly the project froze. I control-alt-deleted to end the process. Upon trying to open up the project, it gets to the loading project screen and then after the files seem to have loaded from the external hard drive (video/photoskept on there), the program freezes and never gets to the edit screen (i.e. it just says "Project Loading" indefinitely. If I control-alt-delete, the app is listed as not responding. Since I had encountered "serious error" with 2.0, I always save as, save copy, etc. etc. in addition to the auto-save to make sure I have plenty of copies. The thing is now if I try to upen up any of the earlier versions, these will not load either...just freezes on the project loading screen.

I called Adobe with little help from them...I did an unistall and a re-install, with no luck. Anyone have any ideas what could be happening?! XP, 3.33 GhZ single processor 1.35 GB ram

Thanks in advance!
Scott.

Scott,

When you called Adobe, what did the T/S rep suggest...just an uninstall/reinstall, or was other troubleshooting mentioned and tried during the phone conversation?

Let us start with your computer...Windows XP, SP3 I assume, 1.35 GB RAM...how much installed RAM and how much available RAM do you have?...Is 1.35 GB RAM = installed or available? How much total and free internal hard drive space does your computer have? Is your computer optimized, defragmented, virtual memory optimized, etc. Are you piling up tons of old projects, saved projects, preview files on your internal hard drive?

You call what you are doing a "fairly simple movie", but what exactly is on the Timeline of that problem project...video (format, duration, number of clips); photos (pixel dimensions and numbers of; other)
What project preset have you set for Premiere Elements..NTSC DV Standard or Widescreen or something else?

As for your external hard drive, what is its format..NTFS or FAT32? Are your Premiere Elements scratch directed to this external hard drive? Is there any networking involved in this mix?

I will be back later with some troubleshooting links.

I will be watching for your responses to my questions and, based on your answers, then try to decide where we go from there.

Scott,

<<When you called Adobe, what did the T/S rep suggest...just an uninstall/reinstall, or was other troubleshooting mentioned and tried during the phone conversation?>>

The suggested renaming the appdata folder to reset it. And I did get rid of encoded, preview and cache. And other than that, he was very vague on what to do....he just wanted to get the call over asap!

It said the drive does not need to be defragmented, and I am not sure how to find the install/available ram.

The project is stored on the "L" external drive, which is connected via USB 2.0. 205 GB used, 25GB free on this external.

The internal hard drive "C" has 64 GB used and 77GB free.

As far as the project itself, it consists of AVI files (Imaginated jpegs), which total 7.24GB, and camcorder clips totaling about 88GB). These were all loaded into the project, and then shortened within Elements, using only about 10 minutes of the files. Miscellaneous music files toal about 30MB. The .prel file (which is on the L drive too (along with several "Save Copy" and "save as" verisions) is about 14.3 MB, with a run time of about 42 minutes. NTSC standard. and I don't know how to find out if scratch is directed to external...but I think it is because "auto saves" are stored there...or is this off base?! No networking.

Thanks!

FYI-

It appears that his problem has been resolved and was actually a shortage of disk space.

Yes, problem resolved. In case anyone has a similar problem...
In going to the adobe page on how to delete/reset preferences, it mentioned about pointing to scratch disks. I had mine set to the location of the .prel file, which was an external drive with little space (apparently b/c there was little space, it would not finish loading). Because of little space, the project wouldn't open on the external drive, and I couldn't change my preferences to make scratch disk the internal. So, I copied the .prel to the internal and unplugged the external. The project opened up (without any of the media files since they were on the external and I was able to change my preference to have the internal drive be the scratch disk. I closed, reconnected the external, and it opened up without a hitch.

Thank you!

Scott,

I have delayed responding to the latest developments in your issue since I wanted to bring closure to this thread with comments that would be helpful to you and other contemplating posting questions here.

First, I am delighted that you are now able to more forward with your projects.

In reviewing the course of events, it became apparent that you posted the same question at another forum (May 1, 2009 2:03 PM) and here (May 1, 2009 2:07 PM). And, after a lot of varied opinions and a lot of dialogs at the other forum, the answer to your dilemma surfaced.

In a single post here I asked you all the questions that would have led to resolution here. Unfortunately, in your response to my questions, questions were left unanswered to two keys questions that I asked and that would have resolved your problem immediately. But, you did not allow us to follow up on my questions/your answers:

Are you piling up tons of old projects, saved projects, preview files on your internal hard drive?

Are your Premiere Elements scratch directed to this external hard drive?

When you did post again here, you reported your outcome. Thank you for that and avoiding a dangling thread. Since you began your outcome report with:
Yes, problem resolved. In case anyone has a similar problem...
I would like to add this comment for others posting their problems here:
1. Please supply significant details when posting. If you do not, that is OK since I will ask you questions to draw the desired information from you to help us work out the problem together.
2. When questions are asked, please answer ALL of them. If not, I will have to ask again which can cause delays to getting things working again.
3. Please follow up.

Scott, to answer some questions that you asked that we left unanswered because of the course of events,
a. To determine installed and available RAM...Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information and scroll down to Total Physical Memory and Available Physical Memory.
b. Source ".avi, imagined jpeg"....DV AVI is the native format of the Premiere Elements Timeline. AVI is a wrapper format that can have different formats, some example, MotionJPEG AVI, AVI MPEG4, and all will have file extensions of .avi. Some non DV AVI formats can create a problem which necessitates converting the file to DV AVI before bringing it into Premiere Elements.
c. From your latest communication, I take it that you now know have to direct Premiere Elements scratch files to the desired locations...so we will skip that.
d. Please review your computer resources to guard against resource issues creating problems when introducing GB and long video clips to projects as well as the way that you have set up AutoSave.

Continued success with your project.
