View Full Version : "Save for Web" scrapbook page

I've recently installed PSE7 (after using PSE5 for a few years), and I wanted to save a 12x12 scrapbook page to view on the web. To get to that point, I did everything the same way as I did in PSE5 and it was fine UNTIL I tried to do it again with a second page.

I resized that page, but when I chose the 'save to web' option, some of the elements had a white square/rectangle behind them(???). I don't know what I am doing wrong; I don't believe there is "preserve transparency" choice anywhere, as I've never noticed one before (but maybe in PSE7 there is that I am not aware of?). And why did it work correctly the first time I did it in PSE7 and not the second (nor the third time when I tried again). Help, I'm confused!! Thanks!

If you want a transparent background, you must choose GIF from the drop down when you SAVE FOR WEB. Choosing JPG will always add a white background. Does that help?

Thanks for your input; I will try that. However, I've always chosen JPG in the past (with PSE5) with no problem. Also, the first layout I saved for web in PSE7 was fine. It was not until I tried it with a second layout that I had this problem. In the 'save for web' window, where it shows the before and after versions, the before window also had the white blocks behind the elements. These elements are on a transparent background in the original layout.

I'm just wondering if this is a glitch in PSE7; maybe I should check for updates.

In any event, I will try what you suggested to see if that works. Thanks!

JPG does not support transparency. PNG does (as does GIF)...most scrap supplies I acquire use JPG for papers and PNG for elements and quick pages (to preserve transparency).

Good luck with your project!

Thanks, Val, for your reply. I am aware that jpgs are used for papers and pngs for elements/QPs. I don't think that is the issue here.

What I am trying to do is post a layout into a web gallery on a digiscrapping site (for a challenge). My page is done, and I have resized it for the web (72 dpi and 500x500 pixels) and when I choose File>SaveforWeb, the before and after image window comes up and I adjust accordingly (JPEG, Medium) so my 732K resized file reduces to about 50-60K to post in the gallery. Normally, I click OK from there and it's fine. With my current layout, when I choose File>SaveforWeb, these white blocks appear behind some of the transparent-background elements in both the before and after windows(?).

I can't understand why this is happening as I have posted many layouts the same way (in PSE5) with no problem, and the first one I did in PSE7 was fine, too. This just started now with this second layout I wanted to save for web in PSE7.

I will consider all suggestions given here and try them, and, as I said in my last post, checking for any updates to PSE7 (since it may be a glitch there). As a last resort, I will just have to reinstall PSE5 so I can get my layout submitted on time!

If I haven't confused the issue and you have any ideas as to what the solution of this problem could be, I'd appreciate any further input!

Thanks,

I understand your question better now. Try flattening your layout first before choosing SAVE FOR WEB. I don't know why it's not working when it used to, but this might be an easy work around. You might try deleting your preferences too and see if that helps.

And, in case you are interested, I have some actions that resize for you.

Thanks, Wendy - I will try flattening the image first and see how that works. Or, I may eventually have to check out your Resize It! Action kit! I'll let you know how I make out.

Diane ..

Just go back and look at your scrapbook page again ... those white rectangles behind the elements sound like you have dragged the elements up from the project bin into your page and made them into smart objects.

You used to be able to drag up from the project bin but with PSE6 & PSE7 doing that creates smart objects.

Remove the elements from the page then add them again ... either by using Edit>Copy then Edit>Paste or by dragging them DOWN into the image in the project bin.

I'm pretty sure that is what has causing the problem :)

Thanks, Wendy!!! Sounds like you hit the nail on the head, so I'm going to try that first.

This page I'm doing is for a "slow scrap" challenge over 4 weeks, and those elements I added for this third week are the ones with the white backgrounds (the first two weeks were done in PSE5). I know those "smart objects" are new to PSE7 (and probably 6, although I never had that one) and I noticed the little icon on the layer thumbnails which indicated "smart objects" but what they are is still a mystery to me as I haven't read up on them yet.

Glad you saw my post; it's so good to hear from you! I miss our days at the Den--hope to be here at the Village more often to "talk" to you.

Hi Diane ...

Sorry that I missed this thread earlier ... but glad that I could help. These smart object do cause confusion and you have to get used to a whole new way of adding things to your pages. The change came in with PSE6 but as I never did use the Photo Bin method to add elements it didn't affect me.

I didn't realise it was you :) ... must admit that I tend to recognise people by their Avatars and their user names :o Oh I too miss the Den, I haven't made any scrapbook pages or kits since it closed so I guess it will soon be time I started again :)

Hi Wendy,
That was the problem - deleted all those smart objects and copied/pasted elements as you suggested - then it was just a "usual" thumbnail--no little smart object icon in the corner! I thought in newer versions they made things easier--I didn't think there was any easier way to add elements than by dragging them up from the photo bin. How do you do it so that change didn't affect you? I'll have to read up on the smart objects to understand how they work, but I must say, at this point I feel like reinstalling PSE5 (old habits die hard!).

Re my user name - when I joined this forum in 2006 I didn't realize I would get so "into" digital photo editing/digiscrapping that I would want to keep my name consistent, as you do. Not that I have so many posts here, but I would probably have to start over again as I don't think I could just change my user name (can I?). Anyway, I would want "Diane" and that was already taken by someone in 2004 that has never even posted here, so I would have to add something to it anyway. One of these days, I will make an avatar that will be consistent to my various user names, so hopefully I will be recognizeable that way as the same person. It would probably be something in the form of a star (as I love stars).

You really should start designing again--I miss all your beautifully creative kits and am always looking to add to my 'Wendy collection!' Be sure to let me know when you do!

Hi Diane ...

Oh I am so pleased that you now have it sorted out ... :) Don't give up on it ... you will get used to it and a little bit of change is good for us

Back in the days of PSE2 (see I am showing my age !!), when we didn't have a photobin, I just got into the habit of having my workspace set to Cascade. Window>Images>Cascade. Then when I have two images open I can move them around and see both in the workspace ...

From there I just drag the elements over from one to the other ...

When they brought out the photobin ... I didn't like it so I closed it down and carried on dragging and dropping as I had always done :D

I'm still not sure if I will make any more kits .. I loved making them but I spent so much time creating every item from scratch that I didn't get a lot of free time ...

... but I will let you know if I do go back to designing :)
