Tutorial for understanding layers?

I've used layers for many years now but am horrible at explaining things - I know how to do it but darn if I can't tell someone - especially in print...

I have a friend who also has photoshop (not in the same town/state) and she is having a hard time with the concept. She said "I have Adobe Photoshop and can't figure out how to use layers. I read, and re-read the manual and I just don't get! Robin, I need a Layers tutorial"

Does anyone have a suggestion on a good place to guide her to? I don't know what version she has, but the basic idea of layers is the same.

One of my favorite books about layers is called Layers (big surprise there huh?) It is by Matt Kloskowski. It is geared towards the main Photoshop, but the basics apply to Elements as well.

A good set of online tutorials for Layers is by Matt is located at KelbyTraining.com (http://www.kelbytraining.com/online/all-classes.html) and it is geared towards PSE. Just scroll all the way to the bottom. It is the 3rd class from the bottom. Classes are for $20/month, but you will have access to all of them.

A favorite place for me is PhotoshopEssentials.com, and here is a link to a Layers tutorial (http://www.photoshopessentials.com/basics/layers/) as well.

Hi ...

Understanding the basic concept of layers helps you to understand the more complex uses ...

So if you image layers are a pile of transparent papers piled up on a desk ... when you look down on them you can see all sorts of things but in fact each one of those things is is actually on its own layer :)
