View Full Version : Use a font without installing it?

I did a search but couldn't find anything so I hope someone here knows the answer.
Basically I would like to use some different fonts, but I don't want to load them permanently. Like brushes type of thing, load as you need them. I have downloaded the fonts, unzipped them, and now want to use them as a 'one of'.
Can this be done in either Elements or CS3?

Fonts are installed for use by all applications thru the operating system, they are not unique to a single application like PSE.
The reason they need to be installed "permanently" is so that the after you use one, the next time you open that particular image, document, etc., the system can show use the same font for editing purposes. Have you ever loaded up a template that someone else made using different fonts so that the text can be edited? A substitution has to be made by your system, and sadly it usually is a bad choice.

Thanks Jeff. I have spent some time searching for an answer to this and have come to the conclusion that it is really quite easy to just delete the font when I have finished with it. cheers

Hi Toni, if you do want to use an uninstalled font - you need to close Elements.
Then find the font and open it and keep it open. When you restart Elements the font will be available in the font drop down. If you use an outside font and don't want the issue with Elements replacing the font when you reopen the image later on you can simplify the text only. It will not be editable then.
You would have to redo the text if you decide on a change later on.

Hey, that's great, I'm off to try it right now. thanks
Edit: It worked! And so quick too. Looking forward to not clogging up with excess fonts now, it takes so long to scroll through them all when you have lots loaded. thanks again
