Hey All,
I am currently using a point and shot camera and am not happy with the quality of the images. I am looking at buying a DSLR in the $500-$800 range- Any suggestions on a really great camera?

Thanks!

I'm thrilled with my new Canon Rebel XSI. It's a good weight. It will take fully automatic to fully manually-set. But as so many have said when this topic comes up...you need to go test-hold them....see what feels good to you.

The DSLR is still daunting to me. But I'm studying how to use it and becoming braver about settings. At first I almost had buyer's remorse, thinking that my P&S did just fine for what I do. And it probably is. But I'm happy to have the versatility of the DSLR, and expect to have more and more fun as I get better with it....more depth (of field???) to my hobby.

The Nikon D40 (http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40.htm)is a good entry level DSLR at a great price.

Like everyone always says, it has to feel right in your hands. Simple as that sounds it's the truth.

I have the Sony A200 and am happy enough with it. It is certainly very user friendly which was important to a tech dummy like me.

When my shots aren't so good it is always operator error. I belong to a Sony forum and see what others get from their A200 so I can't blame the camera for my wonky shots :)

It's also got a lot to do with the lenses you use. Oh dear, once one starts with SLR there's always 'one more lens' one needs :D:D

Good luck

I've heard the Sony is a great camera, the Nikon of course and Canon. I have an XT that is super and a 40D. Your best bet would be to go and see how they feel when you are holding them. It has to be comfortable for you.

Toni, you are so right!I have 4 lenses now and there is always that...one more I need! LOL!

Thanks for all the great suggestions- I found some great deals on Ebay- How do you feel about purchasing from there?

I'm using a Canon XSI, which I like. I suggest you look at Nikon or Canon....both have models in your price range.
As for buying on eBay, there are some huge reputable dealers there. I won't mention the name of a very good seller, but his customer life time approval rating is 99.6. And that is from almost 333,000 customers...which might be from 500,000 sales.
I'm not positive, but I think they're the #1 dealer for Nikon and Canon.

Good luck and let us know which camera you decide on....

Please don't just buy off of Ebay or any other internet site, without first going somewhere and holding the camera! It's just like buying a bike or a pair of shoes......it has to fit you. Feel and weight should be considered. Heck, I want a Nikon D300..because I love the camera...but it's too big for me and there is no way in the world I could carry that around for a full day, so I had to settle for a Nikon D90.

You might want to go to DP REVIEW or some of the camera review sites to help you decide.

Then remember...besides the camera, you need an extra battery, maybe some cards if the one you choose uses different ones than your P & S, a camera bag, maybe a 2nd lense, a filter to cover your lense, etc...etc...

Nikon and Cannon both have cameras in your price range and both are great companies.

Good luck.
