Hi there, I've found my catalogue file, have copied onto the desktop and tried to open it from organizer, only to find that under file/catalogue there is no option to open a catalogue. I have PSE6 and have moved the programme to a new computer and am trying to get my catalogue back. Any advice appreciated.

You can double-click on the catalog file.

Thanks for this. I would have thought this was the answser, but when I double click a PSE dialogue box appears saying catalogue failed to open - the default catalogue could not be found. Please open or create a different catalogue. Then catalogue manage comes up and I still don't have the options of opening a catalogue.

I have PSE7 and am trying to help, a few questions first please. Have you done a complete install onto the new computer? Why did you put the catalogue onto the desktop, is it only copied to the desktop or moved. organizer is the best tool for dealing with files inside PSE, if you try windows type moves or Mac Equivalents you will run into trouble, had you done external back ups on the old computer.
More Info + Easier for the people who know (Not Me alas) to answer, ie what equipment you are running system etc.
All helps.

You should also be able to open the file in PSE via File->Catalog->Open

Thanks Ron and Paige for your replies. To respond to your suggestion Paige, I don't have an option to open a catalogue and this is where I'm stuck. From inside PSE6, when I go to the folder that the catalogue is in, the catalogue doesn't show up for me to select. I have double clicked and get a dialogue box that tells me that the catalogue failed to open.

Ron, I am using Vista. PSE6 progamme files were saved to my external HD when I upgraded from PSE3. I was using PSE on XP on the previous computer. My husband says he installed the programme to the new computer from my EHD. The editor is working ok, so is organiser. I saved the catalogue to my desktop because I was following instructions from a post on a similar subject, it was copied, not moved. It is still on my old computer.

I should mention, that on the previous system, the catalogue would not open and I assumed it was because it was too big for my previous system to open. It is 36MB. Perhaps it is damaged. BTW, it has not been backed up.

I hope this gives you some idea what might be the answer. I am so not looking forward to having to recategorise everything.

Thanks again

I honestly don't think you can drag program files to an EHD and expect them to work. I think you have to do an installation for the original PSE6 CD or download.

As far as you not being able to open the catalog through menus, see this:
