View Full Version : Canon sRAW files from a 40D and PS Elements 3

I'm puzzled!?!?
Having decided to give sRAW files a try on my 40D, on the grounds that I should re-visit RAW processing and that "small" RAW files would not overly limit the number of frames/card (the Canon manual here is contradictory in saying they are either approx. ¼ or ½ the size of a standard RAW file), I find that Elements 3 declines to download them as normal saying that either the files are corrupt (which they seem not to be - of which more below) or that they are in a format it does not recognise (more likely).
In fact, when it comes to it these files actually close the programme, although it remains in tact, as do the shots on the CF card. I can open and process them in DPP (v3.6.0.0) and I can also "Copy and Paste" them from the CF Card into a file created for the purpose in Windows Explorer, but if I try to open them in the PS Elements 3 RAW processor it again declines by closing the programme.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and found a solution please? I imagine there might be a "fix"?
Any assistance will be appreciated.

The Canon 40D is first supported in ACR 4.2, which you will need PSE 5 to use. You can find all the ACR updates and the program versions supported here (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=40&platform=Windows).

If you don't want to upgrade to PSE5 or newer, as suggested by Gene, you can:
- use DPP and output a tiff file to open in PSE3 (a valid choice)
- or download the free Adobe DNG converter which is a standalone software which converts your CR2 type raw file into a DNG, which you can open with your present ACR version. This conversion does not change the raw values, but makes them readable by ACR.
You could try both ways. If you are at ease with DPP, why change?
However if you want to take advantage or the new features of ACR 4.2, upgrading to PSE5 or newer should not be very expensive.

Thanks Michel (and Gene) for your replies.
FTTB I am going to stick with "use DPP and output a tiff file to open in PSE3 (a valid choice)" as Michel suggested. Neither will PSE3 accept a full RAW file from a Canon 40D although it will from my 20D!
Thanks
Adrian
PS Can anyone convince me to upgrade to an Elements version from 3 to
7? 3 seems to give me all I need at present, apart from
the aforementioned "glitch"

The higher versions of PSE have a clarity and vibrance slider in the raw converter which I love so much I have quit using DPP. They also have improved selection and panoramic tools over version 3.

That's torn it! Now have to check my Piggy Bank for funds to upgrade.
Whenever someone uses phrases such as your's coming from practical experience, I'm hooked!
Thanks
