Welcome to the Be Creative Challenge #73. Today's challenge is by our very own Miss Creativity, Deborah. I have been marveled by some of the images she has been putting out there in the gallery using the bas relief filter. This effect can be applied to an entire image or you can select certain parts of the image and copy them onto their own layer and apply the effect to just that area. Well, enough talking, here it is.....
Bas Relief Tutorial by Deborah
1. copy background layer. All the work is done on the copy layer.
On the copy layer, go to filter/sketch/bas relief.
Change the blending mode to soft light.
Then go to the adjustment layer, and Invert, change the blending mode to luminosity.
Again go to the adjustment layer, add brightness/contrast, adjust accordingly. Done!
You may want to play with the different blending modes on each layer. Very Simple.
Here is Deborah's image...

The small print for the challenge is ……
Everyone is invited to participate.
Please join in, share your images, ideas, imagination and inspiration. There are no rules - feel free to experiment and, if you can remember tell us what you did so others can benefit from your experiments.
Please post your images (as many as you like) below in this thread.
If you would like to comment or have a question, please post here. (http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=11)
I'm looking forward to seeing some very interesting images!! Have fun playing!!

Here is my go at the tutorial. I did a really simple image - I started by putting a gradient over the image (since it was pretty monotone to start w/). I then selected some of the tree branches w/ the magic wand and copied them to their own layer. I then did Deborah's tutorial and played w/ the background colors thru the adjustment layers. Lastly I went back to my bas relief layer and added a bevel to the branches to make them more dimensional.
What a cool tutorial, Deborah - so many possitilities!

When experimenting with different blend modes, I discovered that I like the Hue blend mode for the sky for this particular image. Otherwise, everything else is like the tutorial, with minor edits/touch ups.

Thanks, Tammy for showing us Deborah's technique.

Oh boy. I feel another addiction coming on.
This big guy was in one of the aquariums at the San Francisco Academy of Sciences.
I followed the instructions given, but found the Linear Light gave the best contrast/drama.

Thanks for the tut. I love using the adjustment layers and blending modes, and it is good to have the occasional nudge toward doing so.
ooops. I meant to frame it before posting. Oh well.

See. I told you it was addicting!
I discovered that it depends on which LAYER you have selected when you choose the blending mode. With this one, I had the base layer selected, and used the Luminosity blending mode. Isn't THAT interesting? (& I remembered a frame!)

This is my favorite Brugmansia plant. The tut was very easy and quick. I have more to try! See the comments forum for a "Frame" question.

2ND one done. An antiques dealer owns this property. It is from the early 1700s and the nearer house has a thatched roof. Very cool.

I really enjoy doing these tutorials. What I find interesting (another word for challenging) is trying to find the right picture for the effect. This was a tough one to find an appropriate photo.

Here is my image. I made a 3-photo animation but a strange thing happens when I animate it! The first photo is the original. The second is embossed and set to "Luminosity" . The third is embossed and set to "Normal".
The "Luminosity" layer looks just like the "Normal" layer after animation-no brighter colors. I did this twice and the same thing occured both times.
For my foreground/background colors I chose a dark shade picked from one of the pumpkins and a dark grey.

Are you adding emboss or the bas relief to your layer?
Then go to the adjustment layer to add invert. You can add a blending mode too. After that add the brightness and contrast. All three layers you can add a blending mode. Sometimes just adjust the opacity too.
I've also found that this tutorial works better with landscapes or buildings.
Hope this helps

Are you adding emboss or the bas relief to your layer?
Deborah, I'm adding Bas Relief-don't know why I typed emboss instead. In the layers stack with the 3 photos, it is correct. It must be something about animating the image. It really creates an interesting effect!
I did another. This is from a pen and ink sketch that my husband did years ago and I had scanned into the computer. I added a gradient below the Bas relief layer since it was black and white.

I must stop this insanity and get to bed!! Here is my last before I shut off the computer.
I used colors from the photo for foreground/background, applied Bas Relief, did not invert, and used Difference blend mode. The checks are a pattern made from the resulting colors and the technique in the PET newsletter Volume 5, Number 5-Yipes Stripes--yet another addictive tutorial.

Think I did this right. I also adjusted the lighting types, added a light blue filtered effect over the bottom of the photo. Fussed with the hue and saturation, and dodged and burned. Fun tutorial! Thanks all!

Recently this year I purchased PSE 7 and have been playing around with it and doing fun tutorials getting use to the program. Then I began RSS and found that I could subscribe to EV and that was all I needed to have a daily ritual. Look at new post. This is how I got here and thought it might be fun to try the tutorial and submit a picture.
So if I am not playing by the rules then let me know, but I just took a photo and applied the technique that was taught and came up with this.
