Effects Layer Styles Not Previewing

I just upgraded from Elements 2 to 7, and I am having difficulty with my layer styles. I wanted to see what the different drop shadows look like before applying them (I could do that with version 2), but it doesn't show me anything until I click Apply. Is there a setting I can change to allow me to see these effects before applying them? (It does the same thing on all of the layer styles, such as bevels, etc., too.)
