Data Rate

I'm having an issue when trying to burn a project into a DVD. It's only about 15 minutes and maybe 1gig (size) max. I'm getting an error that state that the data rate is set to high and needs to be lowered. Why is that? How can I change it? What will it do to the final product? I want to be able to view it back on a DVD. Here is the exact error message:

"The data rate of this file is too high for DVD. You must replace the file with one of a lower data rate".

Export the slide show from PrEl as an AVI, reimport and try burning from there.

Did this suggestion help at all? I just installed Premiere Elements yesterday, bought a DVD burner today and have wasted 2 blank disks to getting this error message.

BTW, the only way to export to AVI format is to choose File->Export->Movie from the menu. You won't see that option in the toolbar version of Export.

I guess I should have bought RW disks for this first venture into burning DVDs? :(

In the video settings box there is an option to change the data rate at the lower right corner of the dialogue box as well as whether to recompress your video or not. You could try changing the data rate there if you are having an issue. I have not run into this error when exporting movies, but it seems several people have. Let us know if it works :)

I have run into the same problem. Getting the data rate error message after saving my slide show, then exporting it from PS 4.0 as a Microsoft AVI file and then importing it into PE 2.0 and then trying to burn a dvd.

To change the data rate, do I do that before trying to export the slide show as a Microsoft AVI file from PS 4.0? or is that done while in PE 2.0 before creating the dvd?

This is just part one of my message.

First, you cannot export your Photoshop Elements 4.0 slideshow as a Microsoft AVI file. It only exports as a wmv file.

And, if you are going to use the wmv slideshow for DVD-VIDEO produced in Premiere Elements 2.0, you need to use the NTSC DVD profile when you are writing the Creation to wmv in Photoshop Elements.

The AVI business mentioned earlier in this Thread works some times. Another route is to change the data rate manually when you are ready to burn to disc. When the disc is in the drive, you will see data rate change option in the Burn DVD dialog.

There is a Thread somewhere on this. If I cannot find it, I will dig into my pile of info on this.

But, I do need clarification on what is going on with a Microsoft AVI file being exported from Photoshop Elements 4.0. Any other details will be helpful.

My guess is that the answers may reside between (1) setting the NTSC DVD profile for the wmv that is to be written and/or (2) manually adjusting the data rate in the Burn Dialog before you burn to disc.

I can supply step by step, if need be.

These Threads show two cases, one being solved by

Exporting the wmv file from Photoshop Elements to Premiere Elements. From the Timeline there, export as AVI using File/Export/Movie. Bring the AVI back into Premiere Elements Timeline and burn to disc for DVD-VIDEO.

The issue is said to reside in the Photoshop Elements output in these cases. I think I know the reason, but I will pass on going into my theories now. Best, we get you moving forward with two known fixes.
