Diffuse Glow Filter

Did anyone try out the diffuse glow filter mentioned on the back of the last newsletter. I've been messing around for a while and got some quite nice effects although wasn't so happy when I printed them out. (Got nicer results following Jodi's instructions for putting a glow into images that I got off this forum :) )

My main query is how to get the effect on the back of the newsletter which makes it look as if light is streaming in from the window onto the subject. I just couldn't manage to duplicate that. Anybody got any suggestions?

If you have a "compatible" picture, one with a good balance of well lit and shadow, you can achieve similar results. Here's what I did with a stock image in a few minutes:
