I am a new suscriber to this forum and I hope you will allow me to participate in it.I am from Montreal ,Canada.I am a retired teacher and banker.I have been taking pictures for the past 40 years.I recently learned how to use a computer and switch from film to digital pictures about 3 years ago. I learned all that stuff all by myself wiht the help of a lot of books and also from a friendly technician a few times.I now use a PC with Vista Home Premium, Family edition, also a Canon Rebel XT with an EF-S 18-55 lens, along with a zoom Canon Ef 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 IS-USM, a Conon Speedlite 430 EXII and a brand new Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet ( 4x6 approx.).
I don't know how I missed you all but I just discoverd this forum in early February. I love su much that I suscribed after 5 days and I am trying to join you in thisforum today.
I have been pleasantly surprise with all those questions but mostly by the goodwill express by all who take the time to provide the asnwers to various problems. I hope I can join in and like a bunch of other people I will have a lot of questions but I hope one day to be able to participate in some answers, with time. You are doing a finejob with this forum and I wish to congratulate you all for doing so. It is really impressive to look at. I have been looking already at some 100 pages of questions and answers and I have found answers to some of my questions. You should know howver that I have to translate evreything to French. Most of the time it is not a big problem but when you «unsharp mask » tranlated in French, it gives « accentuation » which is also the traduction of «ehhance ». It is a little tricky once in a while. I hope you will all keep up with this tremendous job.I would like to ask you 2 questions to start with: 1) Is it possible to obtain a good 16x20 inches print from a 8 magapixels camera like my Rebel XT.Looking at Scott Kelby book on PSE 6, which I am using now, on page121 & 122 and title«Rule braking Resizing for Poster-Sized Prints » it seems possible. But in all the other books that I haveread so far, it seems to be impossible without a loss of quality ?
Question#2):Can somebody tell me where I can find the place in this forum to establish my signature at the end of this message.I have looked at the video showing how too do it, but so far under Settings and Options,I don't see Edit Signature.
Any help you could provide will be appreciated.
May I add a third question : I recently shot pictures in Raw for the first time.I learned yesterday, unless I misread, that there is a new converter for my Rebel and PSE 6 ? Can I start working on my pictures and later change the converter or should I wait for the new one before downloading my pictures.
Thank you all again and I hope to read a reply soon.
Grandpapa.

Bon jour! and welcome to the Village. It sounds like you will be a great asset to us.

I can answer your second question: Look up toward the top of your window and select "User CP." Then scroll down on the left side of the page to "Edit Signature." I'm sure there will be others along soon to answer your other two questions.

I really appreciate the way you began....by reading old threads before just jumping in. Along those lines, something that is of benefit to me is when you start a new thread, be specific in the title. Don't just say "HELP," or "I'm so confused," etc. I tend to skim right over those titles because my time is limited, and I don't want to waste it searching down what someone needs. Instead, something like "Can't find how to edit signature" tells me instantly if this is a subject I can help with.

Looking forward to seeing photos in your gallery.

Grandpapa,

Welcome!

Regarding the new Adobe Camera Raw plug-in... you should have no problems if you work on your RAW images with your existing plug-in, and then update to the new version later. That is essentially the same thing we all do every time a new version is released.

Welcome to Elements Village, Grandpapa. Glad you joined us.

Here's a link to a chart that shows what quality of print you can expect to get from your images, based on the pixel resolution and megapixel size. Always make sure you have the resolution of your camera set to the highest possible.

Hope this helps.

[quote=grandpapa;445148] 1) Is it possible to obtain a good 16x20 inches print from a 8 magapixels camera like my Rebel XT.

Hi Grandfather, are you one or just old enough to be mine? Unlikely, if you're Gramps, I am probably great gramps

As far as printing to 16 x 20 with an 8 megapixel image, I have a 6 megapixel Fuji S7000 and I print 11 x 17 all the time on plain paper on a Canon Lazer printer at work and they are OK to frame and hang on the wall.

Hope you get this message, and good luck with PSE. I have been dabbling for years, and still have only scratched the surface. And I am still pretty raw about RAW too. I shoot everthing in jpeg and RAW and as yet I am still waiting for a rainy day to really get familiar with it.

And good luck with the translations too. Where are you form in Canada, did you say? I ask because I work for a Canadian company and guys are always visiting from Montreal.

To aphillips4745 :
Thank you su much for your welcome.
I rally am a grandfather going fast to 62.My latest grandchild was born on March 18th.Her name is Lily.
I will likely send a poster to my regular printer and see what will happen.I am now more confident after reading all the answers I received.
I am not an expert with PSE but I keep learning and I hope to try Raw too.I shot about 100 pictures recently in Raw and I will download them shortly and go from there.
I will let you know what will happen.
Thanks again.
