PhotoShop not responding

I click on PhotoShop 5 icon and go straight to "my catalog" instead of the main PhotoShop page (where you can choose organize photos or overview - now I forget all the options). However, I get the hourglass for opening my catalog and it never opens. Eventually, I click on X to close out and it says PhotoShop not responding. No kidding... Any thoughts or am I going to have to uninstall and reinstall and reload all pictures? I hope that is plan B. Thanks in advance.....

Are you using Photoshop Elements 5 or Photoshop 5?

First, around here we like to call the program Photoshop Elements, not Photoshop, which is something else.
