Hi bonnie, welcome to the Village.
Glad you are joining us.
Hope I understand what you are trying to do.
In my picture you will see the the bottom layers are solid or a gradient.
This will be behind the text.
If you want the gradient INSIDE the text - you can do that with a clipping mask.
Type your text - color does not matter.
Then make a new blank layer above your text.
Fill this with your gradient.
It will completely cover your text.
That's ok.
NOW -- holtd down the Alt key and hover your cursor over the deviding line between
your text layer and the gradient.
When you see two black circles - click.
The gradient layer will indent a bit and the gradient is visible inside the text.
I could not figure out how to do three layers at once.
So I did it three times.:o:o:o
Is this what you were after?

Hi Bonnie,
Here's another way to fill text with a gradient.
Create a blank layer above your text layer. Leave this layer active.
Then Ctrl-Click on the text layer. This will create a selection in the shape of the text.
Then drag your gradient tool across the selection.
If you want a stroke around your letters, leave the selection active, then create another new blank layer above the gradient layer and leave this layer active.
From the menu, Edit > Stroke Selection, from the popup dialog, enter a pixel width, choose a color and click OK.
When done with the selection, press Ctrl-D to deselect.
After filling with gradient & stroking, you won't be able to edit the text without recreating the gradient & stroke.
You should link all the text, fill, and stroke layers if you wish to move the text, so that all stay together. To do this, Ctrl-Click on the right side of each layer you wish to link to select each of those layers, then click the link icon at the top of the layer palette.
Hope this helps.
