How do I create a Quick Page Template that will allow me to drop the image in, say a frame, without using "group with previous" option? I have PSE 7.

When I create a QP, I have all the layers stacked.
Then I decide where the "empty" spot is going to be for the photo.
Select the area where the photo will go, and get the marching ants.
Then delete that selection from the layers that are affected.
By the time you get to the bottom layer, you will see the checkerboard indicating transparency. Then you should probably merge all visible layers.
Place the photo under the bottom layer.

I'm new to creating my own elements so sometimes certain terms I don't know. What are "Marching Ants"?

"Marching ants" are when you make a selection, and you get the moving dotted lines around your selection.

Also, I like the "Group with Previous" (or Ctrl+G) method myself. I find it easy to place my new photo in the template, then Ctrl+G it the frame.
