View Full Version : Photo paper

When I got my Elements 3 I received 100 sheets of 4 x 6 photo paper with the programme. I have printed a few photos and feel that the overall look is a bit dull - at least not like the screen. I also bought some Office Depot photo paper which seems whiter and glossier when I got it out to look at. Is there a difference in these photo papers? Should I just throw away the stuff that came with PSE? What do you pros find is the best paper to print photos on? Thanks for any comments.

The best success I have had and heard others relay is use the same paper from the same company as your printer. Epson paper for Epson printers, Canon for Canon etc. If you have a printer that doesn't have a branded paper then Kodak paper is a good one to try.
Hope that helps :)

IF I can just add to what Mary has told you....Make sure that you use their inks with their paper...Does a much better job then those "brand Names"

I purchased some paper named JetPrint Photo Portrait Studio Brilliant Satin Extra Heavy Weight, 10 mil 260 g/m2. It is 8 1/2 by 11 and there are 25 sheets in a package. It is doing very nicely printing my photos on my Epson Photo R320 printer. I bought it at Wal Mart.

Sheila, I think you are the only other person I've ever heard mention the JetPrint paper! I also like the JetPrint ("everyday soft gloss") with my HP deskjet 970. I haven't tried the "fancy" studio flavor yet.

I've got a Canon Pixma printer and as far as I'm concerned there are ONLY two papers that I would use that produce a professional looking finish and they are - Canon Photo Paper Pro and Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy. :) Of course I'm living in Australia and possibly you may have more choice in Canada.

I use Jetprint Portrait Studio (a satin finish) with my HP and get very good results from it. But mostly I stick with HP paper on my HP Printers and Ink. Some of the 3rd party paper may not work well, but the Satin Finish is so nice that I'll continue to use it for special prints.

Hi-
I also tend to stick with the manufacturers paper and ink, but while we are on the subject, does anyone know who makes, or where I can get watercolor paper for printing photos?

Well considering I bought bulk Epson photo paper at Costco when I had my Epson printer (which I returned), I will have to continue using it in my HP printer. (200 8.5 x 11 sheets!) :)

Now I wouldn't consider us a prooooss but we love the praise.. I have a Canon Pixma 450 and I use Canon Extra Glossy Professional Print Paper.. But that's just me. I would go for the brand name and just throw the stuff that PSE gives you away.

Ilfort Pearl does a very nice job with Canon (and probably many other brands of printer).

I only use Epson and Ilford brand papers with my Epson. This really depends on the printer tho so if one could afford to test lower priced papers then by all means...do it.
Got a phone call yesterday from an in-law family member..." can you print up some extra 8 X 10 school pictures of my daughter ?" This is what happens when people find out that you can actually use a photo printer. Meanwhile they are saving money and I see my precious ink flowing to my precious paper....:( I don't ever ask for $$$ and it seems they never offer. Story of my life.... Tho, someday I may actually say ' no '....imagine that....I'd like to.

Jodi, I think it would only be fair for you to at least ask them to contribute in some way, for the consumables. Considering what you're going through right now, it would be reasonable (and expected) for them to help!

I agree with Ray. Maybe you can tell them you're out of paper and ink, but if they'd like to buy you some, here's what you need....and give them a list. If they price out the stuff, they'll find out just how much printing at home costs! And since their in-laws....well....maybe I won't go there....

LMAO...thanks for the input but guess what ? I tried that...saying i was out of ink and paper....ya know what the response was ? " Well, it's no rush so let me know when you get some "...honest. Anyways, yes of course it's in-law peeves..but guess what ?? The way i was brought up is completely different and if i were doing a favor for a 'blood' member they'd throw the money at me and i'd throw it back...in the end they'd make sure i was compensated in one way or another. Anyways, I'm just a bitch these days(more than usual) and i generally don't complain too much about it. I have to keep in mind that I am actually thought about when it comes printing good pictures....that's something. Jodi, do I know how you feel. I've experienced this but not with inlaws but "friends". A certain x-friend would grumble about the cost of ink but seemed to run out plenty of times and send her son here to print his homework. Very annoying.
I have also run into this with my painting. It's a small town and plenty of little groups are always doing fund raisers and looking for donations. They would never hesitate to ask me to donate something I have spent hours painting and that cost me for the wood piece to begin with. Sometimes I would and others I wouldn't. The ones that have actually bought off me, I didn't mind donating to, but people who have never even bought anything off me and then don't mind asking for a donation for something that I don't even have anything to do with.......well let's just say, I don't appreciate it. I don't mind volunteering my time and services for something I believe in, but I don't like being taken advantage of. I don't know why people don't realize that it in order to be good at what you do, you have had expenses (books, supplies, etc).
Now I'm being negative! :D I think I have the unappreciated, "oh your just a housewife and sit around all day" syndrome. My time isn't worth anything unless my butt is sitting in an office.

Sherry, I'm only brave in writing. :( Sometimes I use a little sarcastic humour and hope they get the hint!
I've hit the 'fed up to here' point in my life right now. Tired of being taken advantage of.
Yesterday a company representing the cable company made the mistake of calling me and asking me what I thought of the cable company's service. Well after sitting at home and not going out anywhere for 4 days while waiting for the high definition cable converter to be delivered, I didn't hold back my thoughts. I managed to order this converter no problem, but when it didn't arrive by Thurs night as promised, nor Friday and I called the cable company I was told, my husband's name was on the bill, not mine. They couldn't help me. #&$%*$ They could take MY order for the thing though, but just not tell me why I was still sitting around waiting. Last night after sitting around AGAIN I got hubby to call. Seems the order vanished into thin air and was never finished being processed!!! *&$&%&#$ Hubby, said, "I'll go pick it up at a Rogers store". By now I'm ready to disconnect the cable and the internet (but boy changing all my internet stuff would be a pain).
So (are you still with me?), hubby calls today. He has his precious cable box which is his gift. He had to go to FOUR different Rogers stores before he found one that had any!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now this lowly little housewife, who PAYS all the bills, cleans the house, works on photoshop and tries not to kill her 3 teenagers is going to go for a walk and cool off. I guess I could get a job, so I would be recognized as a 'real' person again, but then when would I have time to do all my creative stuff?????

And that's even giving money!! It's gotten so ridiculous lately. I guess if I ever split up with my husband I don't have to worry about them going after me for the cable bill. :D I should have lowered my voice and said my name was Ken!! The bill even comes as K. and I used the name Karen, but damned if they had Ken on file!

Pauline,
Unfortunately, I don't think this kind of reaction is limited to women who "only" work at home; I've had that happen just because I'm "the wife." My mom stayed home with three kids too, and now that I'm older, I can appreciate how much she did. Unlike those of us who do work outside the home, your job is a 24-hour one; you're never off duty! One of the things on my to-do list is to write my mom a letter and tell her how much I appreciate what she did, and your post moved that higher on my list. So, maybe one day, you'll receive a letter from your grown child telling you how wonderful you are. Until then, hang in there!
Pauline
December 6th, 2005, 06:19 PM
:) thanks Kay. I sure hope so. :) I have already had rewards, like when I watch my daughter's basketball games and one of her friends came up to me and said, longingly, "my Mom used to come to my games before she started working." So I represent those Mom's who can't be there and cheer all the girls on. So many people think teens don't need their parents around as much but I find it just the opposite. They seem to need you more, even though they don't want you to know it.

Jodi, Pauline and all you other work at home Moms -- Remember these words "If you undervalue yourself, people will undervalue you".
I am a wood worker and chip carver. I know exactly what you are talking about -- Could you make me one of those? Would you mind donating one of those to our cause?
My answers are -- yes certainly, it will cost you $xxx.xx. Their answer is Oh we didn't want it that bad.
Jodi Frye
December 6th, 2005, 07:35 PM
Hey Mack...ya, I can respect that. :) That's the problem....and nothing againts non-creative people...they are good at other things....but they don't understand the effort that is put forth by someone who creates from within....from nothing to something with two hands and one mind. They just don't get it....the respect isn't there because they aren't in that same realm. So, we have to make a conscience decision at how much we want to give of ourselves without expecting anything in return...do we do it out of the good of our heart...the 'giving' thing ? Certainly...but how much do we give ? As much as we can handle. I'd like to believe that my sacrifices will pay off in the end...when I go on to that better place...and for when i come back again :D

Mack, a woodworker!! My wood man moved away and I missed him terribly, but then I found elements and my wood is 'aging'. I'm a decorative painter!
Jodi, I agree, non creatives, just don't have a clue. While we love what we are doing, we want to at least be able to pay for our expensive hobbies! :D
Yesterday a friend dropped off a saw she wants painted for Christmas! It's VERY RUSTY and needs priming, and the key chain she handed me to show me the family crest she wants painted on it is about 1.5 x 2"!! Did I mention she wants it for CHRISTMAS???? Her excuse for not at least taking the rust off and priming it, was, 'well my husband has been home, and I couldn't do it with him around'. The week before when she called me to ask me to do it she told me he had been gone for months and just got back (he's a trucker). So.......do I not bother doing it because of the time factor, or charge more because of all the extra bloody work? There is my dilema. She has been a good customer over the years though, but I really hate these last minute things that get dropped on me that need all the extra prep work. I guess I'll see how generous I'm feeling tomorrow. Not to mention it will seriously cut in my ps time!! :(
Jodi Frye
December 6th, 2005, 08:02 PM
Pauline, I was put in that position plenty of times...and honestly, as you know...we always give in. Tho...she should have brought you the saw 2 months ago...she is using you as a last minute way out of an easy Christmas gift...charge more than you would normally charge...tell yourself out loud as you are priming..." I'm worth a heck of alot more than this so you better be happy Lady for what you are getting"...OUT LOUD ! Say it as many times as you wish....until it starts to make ya feel good. Again, charge more....tell her up front..she may change her mind. No skin off of your nose. Talent pays.

Pauline,
Unless you can pretty easily pull it off, I'm not so sure you should attempt it-as much for the stress it'll cause you, but sometimes for your own peice of mind you just need to say no, sorry-it's just not possible. When I was painting I always told my customers that the cut-off for Christmas was December 1st, and I wass still painting Christmas Eve Day!

This is quite some thread I started - asking about paper! I just got a reply on my e-mail and thought it was a mistake but I have just spent the last few minutes reading all you posts. Jodi when your in-laws ask about having some photos printed - I would say - I have found lately that it is actually cheaper to take the prints into the drug store and have them copied. By the time you add the cost of the paper and the cost of the ink and my time it gets too expensive so I only print some of my special designs - or something like that.
Because it IS expensive - my husband gives me a great stocking stuffer - a gift certificate to one of the large stationery stores so I can browse and find paper and goodies I like.

Well I always use Canon paper to print on my Canon printer, and usually the Photo Paper Pro. I get superb results. But I think I'm going to get some cheap generic paper in for printing for my mother in law who won't notice the difference. Yesterday she asked me just to print off ten photos of my grandchildren for her and my sister in law - that's half a pack of photo paper and no offer to pay:( I'd never ask her for the money but if she offered I sure wouldn't refuse.....
On the off topic issue it really bugs me that our joint credit card account ( me and hubby, not mother in law:) ) is quite happy to accept bills paid by me but refuses to discuss anything re the account with me because I am not the main card holder despite the fact that I know all the security passwords - I chose them as my husband is useless at remembering pin numbers/passwords etc. I had the reverse problem with my sons' mobile phone accounts - they were in my name but I just wrote a letter stating that I gave permission for my sons to discuss anything to do with the account. Credit card company won't let us do that!

:D Well when it comes to the important thing like the credit card, that one IS in my name!! :D Ironic though that I don't even have a job, but I sure do have a good credit rating!! My husband would not be concerned that he couldn't call and inquire because he wouldn't want to!! He would be quite thrilled if they told him I had to call!!

Geez, my e-mail notices seem to be working in reverse and I missed the earlier posts.
Shari that's a good idea to tell people that you go somewhere else for processing because it's cheaper. Some people still won't get it though (cause it's not costing THEM).
I will probably tackle the saw. I am more ticked by the condition it came to me in. She even called in the middle of LAST week and didn't bring it over until THIS week! The last thing I did for her was also last minute for a wedding, and AGAIN, I had a miniture picture to work with! I spent extra time on research trying to find something better and had to work up a design. I called when I was done and she didn't come and get it. The following week, we went away on holidays. She had called about 6 times in a panic because the wedding was that weekend. She did not have her gift to bring (her fault). When she came to get it later, again, I wasn't here but the kids were. She left a cheque for $150. I've done many memory boxes for her and charged $85 - they were a bit smaller. I hadn't planned on charging $150 and never told her a price. Part of me felt guilty and that it was too much. The other part of me argued that I spent a week working on this thing and did extra work because of poor planning on her part. I ended up cashing the cheque and telling myself, YOU'RE WORTH IT!!! :) The hardest thing about being a crafters is that you do under value yourself as other undervalue you! I'm trying to change!! :D

Unfortunetly us Artist types never evaluate ourselves the way others do....whichever way that may be. I am rarely satisfied with my work. Alot goes to the trash. Funny, one day I may love what I'm doing and the next day I'll look again at the progress and completely feel the opposite...TRASH !! Yes, I tend to shoot myself in the foot alot. I sabotage myself constantly. Oh well, thus is my nature and I suspect the only time i will change is when I'm 98 and just don't give a crap anymore ;) ...Unless there's a shrink aboard the forum that could explain to me why I do these things to myself.

Canon Semi-Gloss is also an excellent choice, good ratio of price vs quality. Again, I strongly suggest to anyone who wants to sacrifice a few $$ (10$ or less I think in US) to go and get a box of 4 x 6 Ilford Smooth Pearl. It is just amazing with either the Canon or the Epson.
