Hello, I should be chatty and introductory here I realize, but I have a concern that is a bit overriding and don't know where to go. Sorry. I hope to get to know others. I just got a login yesterday, though I subscribed Oh maybe a month ago.

My problem is convoluted; I will paste my explanation in from a document. Please let me know where I might possibly seek assistance with resolving it. Then I should like to find out more how I go about getting to know others and adding to my friends/contacts and/or using the forum. Thanks.

Well, I have goofed up big time. I downloaded Grant’s Tools for Elements 6. I opened it up and pasted .atn and .png files into photo effects. Then went back and renamed .xml files to .metadata files and pasted them into photo effects as well.
Then I went into the Locale/en_us folder, but instead of deleting the MediaDatabase.dbe3 file, I renamed it as a copy. I was afraid it wouldn’t rebuild. So now I have two of these files in there and one is Media Database (2).dbe or something like that and I’m not sure which is which because the word copy is deleted.
Anyhow, to top it off, I seem to have inadvertently moved my locale/en_us folder to another location. After much searching around I found it under c:\Program Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0\Locale_us.
Oh but this is not all--Also in this location, c:\Program Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0\Photo Creations\photo effects, is where I find all of the Grants tools files, with the nicely renamed .xml files. I don’t seem to find any Documents and Settings folder when I enter c:\ drive. Is that normal?
There is more. In my desperate attempt to make every thing right I went into C:\Users\Sara\Application Data\ . I couldn’t find Adobe folder there, but by dropping down to Roaming folder I found an Adobe folder, opened it and then went blithely down to Photoshop Elements\6.0\ where I pasted an entire copy of the original Grants tools download with no modifications, AND created a new folder named Photo Creations and, under that, a new folder photo effects. In the folder photo effects I pasted, yes, another copy of .atn and .png files.
I had quite the day yesterday. Suffice it to say that there are no Grants tools in my Elements 6 application. When I try to apply them to a document I get an error message:
Could not load the actions because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop.
Oh yeah.
Any suggestions? I would greatly appreciate any help and guidance you could offer.
Thank you,
Sanguine

Hi Sanguine and welcome to the Village forum! Glad you decided to join our friendly group.
From what you described, I don't think you messed things up as bad as you think.
You didn't mention what version of Windows you're using, but I'm guessing it might be Vista?
There are a couple of threads around here...that goes into detail on adding Grant's Tools to your system. Your description tells me you know a lot about folders and files...and that's a big plus in your favor.
As far as I know.....you can delete the file "MediaDatabase.dbe3" and it will re-build itself the next time you start Elements. To be safe, I renamed this file as "Old-MediaDatabase.dbe3".

Hang on a bit....and someone that really knows how to solve your problem, will come along and get your fixed up in a jiffy.

Hi Sanguine,

These instructions should work for Windows Vista and PSE6:

Open the actions and pngs folder and place all the items that are in it in this folder:

C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0 \Photo Creations\Photo Effects

Next open the xml files folder and place all the items that are in it in this folder:

C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0 \Locale\ en-US or your own locale>Photo Creations Metadata>Photo Effects

Next rename the Mediadatabase.db3 to MediadatabaseOLD.db3 it is located at C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\6.0 \Locale\ en-US

Then restart Elements. The Mediadatabase.db3 will rebuild but may take a few minutes to do so.

If I were you, I'd delete the extraneous folders you created in another location.

Good luck.

Reading your question concerning Grant's Tools, being new to PSE I'm not sure what this is. Can you explain?

Thanks Jon

Hello,
Glad to hear from you. What you are looking at in this post are directions for installing a download file for Elements 6 & 7 into Windows Vista. The file is called Grants Tools and it contains some very important applications for using masks and layers, which are crucial for getting the full photo editing capacity of Elements.

I goofed up when I was installing, and some very kind people have been walking me through the process.

Hope to talk to you later, I too am new to Elements Village.
Bye

Hi,
when I open Elements 6 and go to photo effects there are blank boxes with the names of applications such as Channels..Layers/Masks...etc. But there are no icons in the boxes, and when I click on apply to document I get the error message

could not load the actions because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop.

I am puzzled because I'm sure I got the download from under Elements 6, and the download is the same for Elements 7, right.

When I click on the error message I get another message saying something about not enough RAM. I should have plenty of RAM.???

Anyway,Thanks for your support. Any more thoughts?
