ok, I will try to make this brief, but i need help!
goal: to upgrade from 5.0 to 7.0 and move from XP to Vista 64 (new computer)
I did a full backup to CD and tried to restore on vista 64 computer. all pictures there but no catalogs or tags. I have read and read and most people say to go back and upgrade 5.0 to 7.0 on the XP computer first? so I am trying to do that, trouble is this is older hp laptop and out of memory. After I did full back up my organizer wouldn't open..i was getting the odbc error. got past that and organizer will open in 5.0 but no pictures are there anymore? i went ahead and installed 7.0 but can't find photos in 5.0 to put over in 7.0?
Remember I backed up photos on cd's (or hope I did that right) but I am afraid to uninstall 5.0 just in case and in order to restore catalog on 7.0 from cd's i would have to delete 5.0 due to memory/space issue.
i'm sorry if I am stupid.
what am I doing wrong?

I did a full backup to CD and tried to restore on vista 64 computer. all pictures there but no catalogs or tags.
We had a similar situation just recently. In one case the restore was the other way, from Vista to XP, the other one I don't remember right now...
The catalog file was restored to a location where the new Organizer could not find it (on the root drive). Do a search for the catalog file and see what comes up. For that and subsequent steps check out this thread:

Ok, i sort of understand all of that so am i searching for these files, etc. on my old XP with the 5.0? ir order to fix that first? or do you think that the backup/restore I already did on the Vista with 7.0 (actually 6.0 then, then bought 7.0 to see if that would work) maybe did work so go search for these files on that?
sorry just want to be clear

No, you should search on the new Vista machine. Do your search with Windows 'Find'. What version did you do the restore with? Use the same version to open the catalog, if you find it (see the other thread). If that was PSE6, do not get into PSE7 until you have the catalog in order, thumbnails rebuilt etc.

Ok, I already uninstalled the 6.0 on the vista machine. i thought i did something wrong. so now I have installed the 7.0 on the vista machine and have NOT yet tried to restore files from the 27 cd's I have. I know the vista stores the catalogs in a different folder i have read that, but can you give or direct me to absolutely specific instructions to do it correctly so i don't have to do again? i am sorry i forgot to tell you that when I did put the 6.0 on the vista machine the pictures (not sure if all yet) were there but no catalogs or tags were there. that is why i thought i did something wrong. sorry for being a pain! thank you!

i am sorry i forgot to tell you that when I did put the 6.0 on the vista machine the pictures (not sure if all yet) were there but no catalogs or tags were there. We'll have to have that clear: How did the pictures get on the Vista machine? Did you not do a full restore using PSE6?

yes I did or at least thought I did but no catalogs or tags were there no matter how hard i searched and researched. Everything I read about VISTA kept referencing 7.0 so i went ahead and got that instead. I unstalled the 6.0 completely and wanted to just start fresh, but of course I still have the back up discs from my old XP which I hope got done correctly. I did do full back up and followed instructions when I did that part too. thanks again. i have spent so many hours I decided to write in. i also called adobe but couldn't get support on the 5.0 on the phone.

Well, if you have PSE7 installed on the Vista machine, go ahead and follow these instructions to restore from your DVDs:
Restore a catalog to a previous version
Sometimes, you want to restore your catalog to a previously saved version. Perhaps you accidentally deleted photos from your current catalog and want them back. The Restore command places the backup copies of the catalog, photos, video clips, audio clips, PDFs, and projects into Photoshop Elements. You could also use this command to move your catalog, photos, and etc., to another computer. (For example, you might use the Backup command to copy everything onto a writable CD or DVD, and then use the Restore command to place the files from the CD or DVD onto the other computer.)
Do either of the following:
If you backed up to removable media, such as a CD or DVD, insert it into your computer.
If you backed up to an external hard drive, make sure that it’s connected to your computer.
In the Photo Browser or Date view, choose File > Restore Catalog From CD, DVD Or Hard Drive.
In Restore From, specify where the files to restore are located:
Select CD/DVD if your backup files are on either of these media. If necessary, use the Select Drive menu to choose the drive with the CD or DVD.
Note: If you are restoring files from a CD or DVD with multisession backup files, use the Select Drive menu to select your most recent backup.
Select Restore From Hard Drive/Other Volume if your backup files are on your hard disk or other removable media, such as a flash drive. Click the Browse button to locate the backup file to restore.
Specify a location for the restored catalog and files:
Select Original Location to restore your catalog, photos, video clips, PDFs, projects, and audio clips to their original locations.
Select New Location to restore the catalog and images to a new drive or folder. Click Browse to select a location. Select Restore Original Folder Structure to preserve the hierarchy of the folders and subfolders that contain your catalog, photos, video clips, PDFs, projects, and audio clips.
Click Restore.
Note: If you selected Restore From CD/DVD, Photoshop Elements prompts you if more than one disc is needed to restore a catalog. Follow the on‑screen instructions, which differ depending on whether you’re restoring a single backup set or a single backup set plus one or more incremental backups.
You can find this and more in PSE7 Help at the Adobe site:

Restore to a new location. It is actually different, i.e. if your photos were in My Pictures before, they would now be in Pictures. But select Restore Original Folder Structure.
You still may run into the problem of the catalog not being found. Post back here and we will try to get that taken care of, too.
