View Full Version : Whats happening: thumbnails don't match image

I scanned a batch of slides, ending up with files scan 001, 002, etc (all jpg). Then edited with PE6, and saved as 001a, 002a etc. Then I view with Win XP browser set to "display files as filmstrip". Great. Now 6 of the 30 files have thumbnail images different than the displayed image. The thumbnail of image 024a shows up on image 027a, etc. Same thing if I display just thumbnails and double click to open full screen.
BUT, when images are copied to a new folder or USB stick, all the thumbnails match just fine. Delete the originals, then copy images back to this folder and all 6 of these revert back to a mismatch!?
Can I try defragging that folder?

A couple of things to try.
In Organizer right click on one of the offending thumbnails and choose rebuild thumbnail from the pop up menu. If this works select all of the mismatched thumbnails and do the right click update.
Recover your catalog. File>Catalog>Recover.
Umm, File>Catalog>Repair/Optimize in 6 I think.

I think Denny is referring to Windows Explorer, not the Organizer.
Windows Explorer on XP caches thumbnails for a folder in the hidden file Thumbs.db. You can delete that file, and Explorer will regenerate it. (You have to set the Explorer option to show hidden files.) Perhaps deleting it will fix your problem.
Defragmenting your disk won't have any impact on this issue.

Karin: RtCl+"refresh thumbnail" fixed the situation thanks; first time in many years I have seen this happen, and I forgot about this tool.
John: Thanks for the ideas. Interesting search on "Thumbs.db" yielded 40 files, half in the "Program files\..." directories, and half of these in \Elements 4.0\; none in \PE 6.0\. (other half in \HP drivers\ etc). Furthermore, none of these files are newer than 9/09/05 when I installed PE4 in 2006.
There is no clue as to the thumbs.db file that may apply to the XP Explorer image file listings that are on my computer. So, best not to even think about deleting any of this stuff, I think.
