I have lots of digital images, enough so that I am closing in on 70% of my 200 GB hard drive. And, recently I started taking saving two of each image, a jpeg and a RAW file, so the bytes are really piling up.
I really don’t want to take the time to delete files, and after all, one of them may just be “the one” especially if I ever figure out how to use photoshop elements.
So what do you think of this idea?
I buy two 1TB external drives (the 2nd is for backup) and I transfer all my images to these drives. Then I transfer my organizer to the new external drive and use this as the working drive to edit files in photoshop elements.
I currently have a 200 GB external Seagate that I am using as backup, and I have experimented with opening files on the Seagate and editing without any problems.
Does anyone see any holes in this plan

I suggest you move this question to the regular section. I'm not sure the Organizer experts read the scrapbooking section. I do remember hearing about disconnect when moving files - so don't do anything until the Organizer experts respond.

As far as the organizer, I would do the moving with in Organizer and not windows. I'd first set up my folders in the new ehd using windows first. Then do the move. That will save you some time. It will take a while to do it all especially if you have a lot of folders.
I moved my organizer catalog to my ehd drive too. What I did first was to find where the file was stored in windows explorer. Made a copy of it. I moved the copy to my ehd renaming it to the file I wanted it to be. I then opened organizer, then when I selected the catalog I navitaged to my ehd. I also set the default there too. Once I opned the catalog and new all was fine with it, I deleted the other catalog.

How did you locate the file in Explorer? Are you talking about specific photo files or a specific catalog folder? There is an option to move in the Organizer, but I got the impression from the post that this was not how you did it. Can you elaborate a little? Thanks.

I'm loading the organizer now, but I think if you do File - catalog - open, look where the file is there. THen I opened explorer and found it. yes that will show you exactly where you file is stored.
Okay I found where mine was orginially.

Marcie,
Thanks for the advice to use Organizer to move the files. Looks like you are already using an External Drive to store files. Any problems with editing files when you open them from the EXD?

You are welcome. I have no problems with my photos on my ehd at all. Runs very well for me.

I had hide folders checked. Once I made all folders available they showed up exactly where you said they would be. Thank you very much.
