View Full Version : having trouble opening photos from Bridge to PSE

I'm a mac user with PSE 6. When I double click on an image in Bridge to open it in PSE nothing happens. I have to go up to file >open with and then it gives me the option of opening it in Photoshop Elements 6, Phototshop Elements 4 (my older version) or something that's called CheckPlugin (default)
This is something new and I'm not sure what has happened.
(Actually when I double click on the image a little icon with an A on it begins jumping up and down in the menu bar, but I've no idea what that is.)
Hope it's something really simple that's just beyond my even simpler mind and that someone can help me with it!
Thanks

...or something that's called CheckPlugin (default)
I can set the default in the file type associations in my Windows version of Bridge.
Check your Bridge Preferences and see what the default setting for the file type you are trying to open is set to. If it is CheckPlugin, change it back to PSE7.

Hi Sue ...
That should work OK on the Mac too ... do let us know how you go on with it :)

Thanks for the advice.
I couldn't actually find the section on image opening in the Bridge preferences, but somehow (by luck rather than judgement) when I now go to file>open with, PSE has become the default as opposed to CheckPlugin so it's working as it should.
I'm still getting a message when I first open a photo from Bridge into PSE that says could not load disk styles because the disk is not available. I posted about that problem several weeks ago and Wendy responded telling me to reset the prefs. I wasn't able to find it to reset so it's still happening.
Also when I open the brushes menu, I'm getting them as a list rather than icons which I used to get.
I think all these things are connected, but I don't really understand how to fix them through the preferences.
I appreciate the fact that my qustions are also answered promptly and without making me feel like an idiot.
Any more advice on these problems would be gratefully received!
Cheers

Hi Sue ...
First thing is Bridge Preferences ... Open Bridge then open the preferences. The section you need is called File Type Associations.
To reset the prefs (Editor not Bridge)
To do that close down Elements then click on the Editor start up icon and quickly hold down the Control, Alt and Shift keys (Mac users: Command, Option and Shift). Continue to hold down all three keys until you get a screen asking if you want to delete Settings ... just say Yes. You do have to be quick holding down the keys so if you have problems with it try holding down the keys with one hand before you click on the icon :)
Brushes List ... Click on the Brush Tool then look up at the top of the screen (where you change the brushes) and click on the stroke icon.
A box pops up ... look at the far right top corner and you will see two tiny black triangles, click on those.
Another menu pops up ... change the setting to Stroke Thumbnail :)
If you get stuck just ask again :)

Thanks Wendy,
two out of three aint bad! ( as the words of the old song go)
1) I can now open an image in PSE by double clicking on it in Bridge. For that I think I went to the Bridge prefs as you suggested.
2) The brushes are all back where they belong following your instructions.
3) I think I followed the tricky instructions(although anything where you have to hold more than 2 keys down is a bit much for me!) so it would not say it could not open as it could not load disk styles, but that message is still coming up the first time I try to open an image from Bridge to PSE. Still I think I can live with that if I can't fix it!
Cheers
Sue
